The female will not leave the nest when an egg is hatching. If the chick is having a problem completly freeing it self from the shell the female should help the chick. This can be a long process, hard work for the chick, they take rest breaks. Hope we have a hatch before dark.

I'm very sure we have a hatch. At 5:18 mom big poop, then moved a 1/2 shell, got a pic of the shell, but not a clear pic. I'll post pics, but watching for more.

Very shortly after this pic, I rather sure saw a little head coming up and going down immediately. But I must have a pic before I'm quite sure about it. Ooooooh it's so exciting!

Oooh, that would have been marvellous to see! One pic I took more, but after that I still can't be 100% sure, even I think I saw that little one already. In this pic there wasn't anymore so much light...

That left circle was a hole egg, Mom rolled it - but how about that other circle? Hard work this observing but so intresting. Hope that everything is fine with those being & coming ones! :sfwand:

Thanks for the great coverage...I tried to keep my eye on this nest today...but between chores and the eagle nests, it looks like I missed some important parts!!

The male returned several times to the nest, as we would expect. The last time the male was on the nest was between 3:28 pm and 3:43 pm. He did not return with a fish before dark, hopefully he will be in early AM with breakfast. At 5:18 pm the female did a big POOP, and then turned around, picked up the 1/2 shell and dropped it in the left front of the nest bowl.

Two bad pics (sorry) of the female picking up the shell a dropping it.

So 5:18 pm for an (almost certain) confirmation of a hatch?

That is such great news! Thank you.

Nesting Notes 2010
2/6/10 -
We heard from an experienced observer that there was a hatch at 5:18pm.
Here is the report from :snowflakewow: LC, "I'm very sure you had a hatch.
At 5:18 mom did a poop and then moved a 1/2 shell to left end of the nest bowl." BW

It's very hard to say, but I think that there is a broken eggshell (white on right)

No, "Dad" came to the nest about 07:00 am and was there only few seconds and flew away. Maybe he wasn't welcome without any food.
