Just a quick update on the WHOI nest.

This afternoon ( 3:00/ 4:00) at the nest site, I observed two ospreys circle the nest, then land on the nest.

The male spent his time mantling, the female was very calm. When the male left the nest (i was hoping to get sticks) the female remained calm on the nest. Within minutes of the male leaving…..Red-tailed Hawk attacked the female…of course, she flew off .

I believe from many hours of observing this nest on site, cam and cam viewers pics, the female is the WHOI female and her mate did not return.

Hoping anyone interested will check the cam, and ANYONE in the WHOI area will take some time to document the nest site….90% is looking up!!!

BTW…Jeff is my witness.

He was on the nest at about 8:00 am and return at 9:00 with a fish. He stayed with the fish for about a minute, then flew off and returned again with the fish. I hope he'll be back with sticks

BOTH ON THE NEST  Jeff reported another osprey over head. Nice to see the male defend the nest and the female remain calm :loveshow:

Both on the nest this afternoon and even a mating attempt. This is the first both have been on the nest since 4/22, the last time one was on the nest was, twice, on 4/24 for less a minute.

I'll post pics later...I think I'll take a ride down to the nest now. I'll leave the screen recording on.

Any news worth reporting, Jazzel? (After you took a ride down to check out the nest...) I, too, am very intrigued by this one.

Mary, when this plays out, I'll be writing a book.

Resident female returned to her nest after migration, her mate did not. She was welcomed by RTH newbie nesters.

She quickly accepted a new mate...then a young male decided to build his nest about 500 yards from the cam nest...you can see how stressed this situation has been on all the birds.

I haven't seen the RTHs for at least 5 days...they likely lost their clutch...they are just as stressed chasing the ospreys, as the ospreys are being chased. RTH's only have one clutch a season, sometimes, but rarely, they will renest after a loss.

Also there are 2 (maybe 3 ) more young males trying to nest on utility poles less than a 1/2 mile from the WHOI site. Plus the other established nests in the area with incubating adults on high alert.

Looking forward to reading your book, Jazzel!

Keep up the fine documentation on this thread so you won't forget any specifics of the high drama! :lol2:

There's still a territory issue with an osprey nesting on building about 500 yards from the cam nest....the good news is the new osprey seems to have a female now.

The new WHOI male has been very busy this morning, he did lose the big stick overboard
