BETH, An osprey in SC at this time of year!!! I wish you had more pics, do you? I'm looking at some white tips on feathers, it would be great to see a full body shot, to get a better idea of age. 2011 is starting out STRANGE :-?

Everything going well here, except for nesting material. This afternoon…fish…then mating. The female is spending a lot of time on the nest, very good.

The site has confirmed a new pair.

The new pair may be new at nesting….not much going on in the nesting material department. Young nesters tend to be minimalists…..some never change.

That said, when a young male picks a nest site, he starts his nest, defends his nest site from other males, while trying to attract a female… This usually brings more single males, as well as interested females. Often, resulting in no nest, then continued to the next season, resulting in eggs. These are the "intruder" issues that many ospreys have to overcome, sometimes many times in their breeding life.

It will be interesting to figure out, if one or both are young. I have no opinion on the female, but the male may be young…based on nesting material…but he, or both could be just young, or minimalists.

I have a couple of ground observation nests, on platforms, season after season, I wonder how they fledge young ( a Morning Dove builds a better nest ). The resident pair add very little material, always low key. It seems to work…maybe low profile??? A huge difference on this nest, a nestling could be in big trouble if that tower base isn't covered….I hope we see more, much more nesting material added to this nest.

Hopefully, the cam view will be adjusted to see more of the nest. The view, now, would be great for eggs, hatching and nestlings…at least the cam is on and good Moderator updates.

Getting the nest in shape is what I'm watching... They (Hilton Head) could have, should have (my opinion) gone up and put nesting material on the grate (platform) before nesting season...standard procedure for most new, or damaged nests.

This nest doesn't look good, to me. What do you think? Not much relevant input from the cam blog. Also, for me, very hard to follow the zoom in, zoom out, by the site.

When I observe this behavior, one extreme mantling, one very calm, indicates a very real intruder/territory issue. Also, the nest repair is going very slowly.

Often the calm one is the intruder and the resident osprey is defensive (mantling). But, since this nest doesn't have a resident osprey, per the moderator reports, and I believe the moderator is correct…I'm observing…very interesting.

Head markings take a lot of study... wind (those feathers move) These pics are from yesterday
