I hate to bring up the possibility but ..... 7 foot tides could have taken that whole structure out.

Hello, dear Owl Lovers:

(I wrote a lengythy post last Saturday, unfortunately it, too, disappeared again). Ugghh.

Mostly I wanted to apologize to CCB and Libby for my drastic statement. I was so overcome with the feeling of helplessness. I had looked at a map of the island and I was aware that there was once a military installation--actually a Coast Guard Station-- and so I really had no idea how dangerous a rescue mission would be. I live not far South from there and experienced wind gusts in excess of 60 mph. It sounded as though a freight train or low-flying plane went by. I also wrote that I hoped that if our owlets were no longer alive, I had no hope --by Sunday-- of the parents getting back in time, and that they had simply fallen asleep and that a gentle death took them. Our babies had so many strikes against them, as happy as I was to see them so full of life and "wriggly" I, also, had an ominous feeling from the beginning.

It was comforting to read all the messages, and so I don't want to omit thanking all the owl lovers for the very nice, welcome messages, the beautiful "graphics" and, of course, I join everyone in welcoming the owl lovers who joined after I did.

I am reminded of another adage: "Man plans and God laughs."

Julie, I suspect that the reason you're losing your posts is that you're accidentally hitting "save" instead of "submit". If that happens again, go into your User Control Panel (at the top of the page) & look under Options for "Manage Drafts". Click on that & what you typed should pop up!

I also like your second adage as well as the first one!
:D

I would like to offer to all a bundle of condolences, and a LOT of celebrating...life, mother nature,
and the simple fact that it has been and always will be survival of the fittest.

It was a long shot to even have a nest this late, chicks alive, and facing such possibility for
storms... We want to see it all, watch every aspect of it, count the eggs, notice when they begin
mating, watch for hatchlings, watch the feeding, the pellets, the entire... and the deaths from mother nature are as much a part of it as all the rest.

We cannot interfere, we cannot dare assist for fear they will not grow as fierce or as hungry
as they need to be to make it. We KNOW going in that it may not be pretty at all times,
and we KNOW mother nature is an exacting master.

Only a very small percentage of new adult owls make it through their first year anyway, food is often scarce, and they have natural enemies...

We are able to, and free to watch, but we have to take the bad with the good.

Don't be disheartened. We are all hopeful the parents have survived and will live to hatch more.

finis

Thanks from me too Duchess. It is the way of nature, and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to watch the miracles that we see, good and bad.
I'm hoping we get an update soon.

Welcome to our forum, Duchess! :grwelcom

Your words are very true, & if we want to be able to watch the good things on these cams, we need to prepare ourselves for the bad things that happen as well...

Hey folks :turkeyspread: There is a poem I received from someone once, which you may have heard yourself. It starts like this
We who chose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan... Irving Townsend

One of the definitions of bravery and courage, is to continue onward in the face of fear or uncertainty. That is what is required of us if we want to experience the joy and true beauty of these creatures. There are others who likewise chose NOT to surround themselves with creatures having temporary lives, and they will not experience the fear, or shed any tears. But they will never experience the joy we have, or feel the connection and bond a human can have with creatures.

So chose to be brave! ;)

Thank you all for your uplifting posts. To me it is a priviledge to be able to see nature in action.

I needed that....I have had many dogs since living in this house the past 12 years and before in NC.

When people question me if I would get more after being heartbroken by making the decision "they will not suffer"....I so often say "I believe it has been better to have loved them (& lost them) than to not have known them at all."

I put 3 to sleep in June and am still thinking of how I filled their last years with love and comfort, and their return to me with so much affection.

Great attitude to have, Joanne! It is hard to lose them since they are family, but when you see how mistreated other pets are, you know how fortunate yours are.

Beautiful, Leelee...and I choose to continue as well...and I agree with you 100%, joanne!! If I chose to focus on the end of the life of an animal I bring into my house, rather than the joy that wonderful/quirky pet would bring, I would never get another pet! It is heartbreaking to lose one, but never have I ever felt regret for having had them in my life!!

Hi CalifPatti! From what I've heard, the biologists won't be able to go out there until after Thanksgiving, I guess mostly due to high water, etc. I'm sure that as soon as there is info available, Libby will let us know.

I think we might be getting an update prior to CCB's trip out there next week. Hope we hear soon!

Hi Catwoman and Obxbarb! Thank you so much for the responses. I think we are all trying to have patience - it just seems forever when you are waiting for information. You probably feel the same thing and even more so given your personal involvement. I'll keep the faith and hope alive! Have a good evening!
