Homeowners turn to owls to battle rodent problem
The Associated Press
Posted: 11/19/2010 05:42:25 PM PST
Updated: 11/19/2010 05:42:26 PM PST

DANVILLE, Calif.—Homeowners in an upscale development in Danville are turning to a
natural method to try to control a spike in rodents in their neighborhood.
Because a growing population of rats, gophers, moles and voles have been creating
dirt mounds in yards, eating bushes and leaving droppings behind, members of the
Danville Ranch/California Chateau Homeowners Association are trying to attract more
barn owls to the area.
The Contra Costa Times reports that the association has purchased four wooden
boxes designed to attract owls.
It's hoped barn owls will nest in the boxes, reproduce, then feast on the growing
population of rodents.
A nonprofit called the Hungry Owl Project sells the boxes for $140 each.
An official with the project says with the habitat for barn owls on the decline,
the boxes should also help the owl population.
