Tale of two bold mice an online hit
Heligan Barn Owls have guests OR DINNER?

Two brave mice are creating a stir on the internet after setting up home in an owls' nest.

The wood mice moved into the Barn Owl Tower, which was specially constructed for the nocturnal birds at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall.

And their antics are being captured thanks to a "Mouse Cam" set up to watch them on the tourist attraction's website,
Daily hits on the website have doubled since the introduction of the cameras, fuelled perhaps by people wanting to see the mice meet a grisly end.

The gardens' managing director, Peter Stafford, said: "For the autumn our team have moved the cameras underground to show life for a mouse.

"It's perhaps not the wisest place for the creatures to make their home but it makes for fascinating viewing."

Fortunately for the mice - a major food source for the birds of prey - there are currently no barn owls in residence, though earlier this year the webcam followed the latest brood courting and raising their young.

In 2007, viewers of the BBC Springwatch programme saw Hannibal, one of the barn owl chicks, eat his siblings alive.

Heligan Wild is situated in a hide in the middle of the estate near St Austell, designed to give visitors close and intimate views of the wildlife, either immediately outside or through a selection of remote cameras placed around the site.

:pumpwave: hi kittenface. Caught mom n dad pro-riet in nestkast 4 sud (south) this morning, which is late afternoon their time. I noticed if I scrolled down, the time stamp on the top of the screen disappears from view. Hadnt noticed that before, but it is live as you can see time changing every 7 seconds or so.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ......

Suzanne - love your dutch kerkuilen! Always check in to see them.

Beth - tried watching your mouse at heligan. He moved so fast washing himself, etc that his head was pizelated out of focus LOL! Not exactly "warming up" to the little critter ha ha !

Peek-a-boo! A barn owl on the island of Texel. It's foggy and I think he is waiting for his partner to come home.

Texel (pronouinced Tessel) is one of the islands off the coast of The Netherlands. The cam is here
http://www.kerkuiltexel.nl/webcams/ The username and password is given on the first page. Once you enter that you go to a 2nd page and there you can select different channels. CH1 is the outside view and CH2 is inside.

Right now the owl is still outside and hiding behind the box. I am hoping to catch the arrival of his/her partner.

:wavingindian: Hi there Beth - I took these pictures for you lol. When I looked this am, I noticed that heligan has posted more info under the mouse cam view, stating that to avoid confusion, they want viewers to know that the mouse chamber is not in the same resident barn owl tower that we are viewing, and that the chamber is too small anyway for anything but the mice to enter! So your mice are somewhat safe. They were snuggled all together, 3 that I could see, maybe more?
