:girlsad3: California Condor #63 "Junipero" a single father at this point raising chick #1077 was noticed to have a foot injury of some sort a couple of days ago by cam viewers. Earlier this afternoon a close up was obtained and it is a very significant if not catastrophic injury/condition. It looks to me as if an amputation is the only thing left to do at this point, but do not know if condors can tolerate that and survive. There seems to be exposed bone proximal to the left ankle with gangrene distally. When he travels on the ground, he is hopping on the good extremity and is not using the left as a stabilizer. He seems to be capable of flight. Nobody has seen him eat or drink that I am aware of, but I have seen him perched on the rim of the watering hole and I did see when he was near the carcass this afternoon, start to reach over to pull at, but changed his mind before making contact. VWS response to cam viewers on the 13th, then below that is a screen capture from the afternoon of the 14th by Cali Condor:

Hi Viewers,
Thank you for the reporting on Junipero's (#663) limp. We have Biologists in the area trying to locate Junipero to get a better look at his foot. It's difficult to say at this stage if he's injured or if he has something stuck to his foot. He is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent so it's important we get a better look at his foot before we make our next move.
Thank you again for your keen cam observations, we greatly appreciate the support.

Junipero Update
Hi Viewers,
A follow-up on Junipero's (#663, purple tag 63) injured leg/foot. He showed up briefly yesterday afternoon and stuck around just long enough to get a close look at his left leg/foot with the cam. Based on the footage, a condor team veterinarian confirmed that necrosis has taken over his lower leg and foot. As to what caused this, we can't determine that from the photo alone, possibly a bone break, but hard to say. He showed up again this afternoon and actually drank water and fed on a carcass briefly before he was flushed off by Shadow. We were able to get additional looks at his injury today and it does appear he may have signs of a bone break, again, not completely conclusive at this stage.
So this is a call to action for all condor cam watchers to keep an eye out for Junipero. Continue to post photos and provide details about his behavior, it's such a huge to help to us.
Despite his unfortunate situation, Junipero is still flying quite well and we even picked up his radio signal toward his nest site earlier this week. Junipero doesn't appear to be emaciated at this stage, which is very encouraging. As you know, wildlife are amazingly resilient and can overcome serious injuries in the wild and find ways to survive.
Junipero is currently rearing a wild chick (#1077) as a solo parent at an extremely remote nest location in Big Sur, so that makes his situation even more difficult. Chick #1077 is almost 6 months old and should be fledging any day now.
Current plan- The Pinnacles team is on standby and will be ready to trap him in the event he shows up at their release site. We will continue to track his movements very closely in Big Sur and keep baiting the feeding site in hopes of spotting him on the cam.
Big thanks to beabee Cali Condor

:buzzybee: Phoenix was at the sanctuary today. Also, Junipero was there this morning and could be seen standing next to the carcass alone, but not seen eating.

Condor Update
Hi Viewers,
A follow-up on Junipero's (#663, purple tag 63) injured leg/foot. We are hopeful he will visit the sanctuary to feed in the next day or two to get a look at his leg injury. Please continue to post photos and provide details about his behavior, it's such a huge to help to us.

:eggthumb: Junipero's radio signal was picked up again yesterday. Update from VWS:

Ventana Wildlife Soc Mod • 5 hours ago
Hi everyone,
Good news, Junipero (663) was picked up by radio signal yesterday toward his nest site. However, he has not been observed on the cam recently, so we have no new information on the condition of his injured leg. We are encouraged he's still moving around and that could also indicate he's finding wild sources of food for his chick, #1077.
Keep your eyes on the cam, he could show up at any time!

:eggthumb: Redwood Queen and Phoenix were both at the sanctuary today.

Edit to add: Junipero visited the Big Sur Sanctuary just before dark on 9/29/21 and could be seen attempting to ward off another condor from the carcass. He also seemed to eat maybe a little as he stuck his whole head within the carcass. His talons/distal foot area remain curled/drawn, but in this lighting at no time did the left foot look as black as previous and possibly not as swollen in areas. There were not any great close up views. At times the coloring looked almost the same as the other foot and other times it looked obviously darker. When he stood above the water hole and just before he turned to fly off, you could see an obvious deformity/angulation at the ankle joint that looks to be from a possible fracture. Was hoping to see if they mentioned him at their zoom chat on the afternoon of 9/30/21, but so far, I have not seen a link.

Edit to add at 3:10 am on 10/1/21: I was able to find the Zoom Chat from VWS on 9/30/21 that I referred to in the post above. Here are some things I was able to pull from it, then following is the zoom chat with the timeframe noted when they give the update on Junipero within the chat and also his most recent visit from the 29th. The initial pic they show is a previous one when his injury was first noted, the new stuff starts with a very short video of his flyoff from the water hole that shows the angulation from the fracture. Some generalizations of what he said:

The necropsy is not back on #438 his mate that he lost earlier this season, but they suspect it was from lead poisoning. When they are in a position to check on his whereabouts per radio signal, they continue to find him near the nest area and this bodes well for his chick that he is raising alone and now with the hardship of his severe injury. After many years of working with/observing the condors the speaker said, his drive to feed his chick is no different than that of humans. They will die trying to keep their chicks alive. He mentioned that it was good that Junipero came in late to feed this last time as the more dominant birds are there earlier in the day. Pinnacles is still on standby to capture Junipero if he comes their way. They will not be able to tell how he was possibly injured unless he is captured. It could be an injury from a natural predator, collision with a manmade object, gunshot wound, etc. They have had a condor with a "fractured back" heal on its own, albeit with a disability, but able to continue with its life. He believes Junipero is the toughest condor he has seen.

Timeframe for Junipero update starts at the 27:53 minute and ends at the 33:53 within the zoom chat.

:5val: Iniko begins the next chapter in her life later this morning as VWS biologists retrieve her from the LA Zoo and take her to San Simeon for eventual release into the wild! From the VWS news letter:

Watch Iniko on the Condor Cam starting this Wednesday
Iniko (1031), the 1.5-year-old condor chick who has been in the care of the Los Angeles Zoo since the Dolan Fire last year, is coming back home to Central California this week.

San Simeon Condor Cam https://www.ventanaws.org/

Tuesday, October 12th marks a new chapter in the life of Big Sur's most resilient condor, "Iniko." Escorted by VWS biologists, tomorrow morning Iniko begins the journey from Los Angeles to her release site in San Simeon, CA.

Upon arrival in San Simeon, Iniko will be given an official wing tag, signifying her re-entry into the Big Sur Flock for the first time in over a year. Biologists have bestowed upon her the nickname, "Halloween Queen" due to the fact that she will receive an orange tag with the number 31 (short for #1031) painted in black.

On Wednesday morning, Iniko will be introduced into the pre-release pen with nine other juvenile condors. Viewers can expect to see Iniko on the explore.org San Simeon Condor Cam starting Wednesday morning, 10/13/21.

Iniko will later be released to the wild on December 4th, 2021.

From the VWS newsletter.

:flirty: We are just hours away from Iniko's arrival to the San Simeon pre-release pen:

Yes, we are all so excited. Iniko is on her way and will join the other San Simeon cohort tomorrow between 11-12. She was kenneled up this morning at LA Zoo and transported by US Fish &Wildlife Service crew to Bittercreek NWR this afternoon where she will be picked by our crew (Kara, Grayson, and Carolyn) and driven to San Simeon tonight. Iniko will spend the night in her kennel and then join the others after we attach her new transmitters in the late morning hours. She's almost here!
