About our EaglesBald eagles have resided on the Marco Island Nature Preserve property since the 1970’s. The Preserve has a new family of bald eagles as of September 2018 and the nesting season has been a great success so far resulting in two eaglets as of February 2019. Calusa seems to be taken with her new mate and has trained him well. We are looking forward too many years of successful breeding seasons with our new family.
As you may remember our last pair were Paleo and Calusa named by the Tommie Barfield Elementary 2011 fifth grade class. In February of 2018 we lost Paleo in a flying accident. We are working with Tommie Barfield Elementary to have them name the new mate, stay tuned for the results.
The bald eagle, a state and federally protected species, holds a special status of prominence as America’s symbol for freedom and strength. The bald eagle also holds symbolic significance in our community as the City uses the eagle on its logo and signs. The Marco Island Charter Middle School’s mascot is also the bald eagle."
