Cams, Chat, Nest Inf, & FAQ New 2018

Male: Nicholas
Female: Victoria

Nest Info from Cam link:
"Two Eagles, Two Storms and Two Choices

Victoria and Nicholas, two American bald eagles, have a story of hope in the midst of life’s storms, literally! These two eagles, whose nest has been in our family’s back pasture for over 16 years, have felt the fury of life’s storms, twice!

The first storm was Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm with winds topping 185 mph in some areas, left a wake of destruction in its path. Homes were destroyed by the hundreds and millions were left without power. Nicholas and Victoria also felt the wrath of Irma as the storm toppled both their nest and the tree that was home. The storm destroyed their dwelling but not their strength of heart. They had a choice to make and we wondered if they would choose another location in which to build. We were overjoyed when we discovered they had started rebuilding in the tree next to their old nest, immediately! Their tenacity was a sight to behold, and before the season was over, their new home was rebuilt and well established. We were so encouraged with their perseverance that we put up two nest cameras (during off season) to share their story with others, and what a story it has been.

Fast forward to Friday, December 21, 2018, when an unnamed storm, unexpected and unseasonable, blew through our area with pounding rain and ferocious winds. Sadly, just a year and a half later, their nest was blown to the ground in pieces again!. We wondered if they would relocate, but this was Nicholas and Victoria. The very next day they began to rebuild! And even in the midst of their rebuilding, intruders have come and they have had to fight for their place. We know this because the cameras we placed after Irma were not destroyed and we are able to watch this incredible story continue, and now, so can you.

This pair of eagles have been an inspiration to us all. Their tenacity and their courage have given great hope in the midst of our own storms. Many folks have lost so much in these recent months, to fire, hurricanes, and tragedy. It is our prayer that the God-given instinct of Nicholas and Victoria to rebuild would encourage us all. We can’t determine when the storm will hit, but we can choose to rebuild! Nicholas and Victoria are showing us how!

We hope you enjoy their continuing story.

~Some Facts About Eagle Country~

This eagle’s nest is located on private property, which is also a working cattle ranch, near a large state park in southwest Florida. The river in the park serves as a great food source for the eagles.

We currently have two cameras, one close to the nest and the other about 60 feet away for a broader view. Also, because this is a ranch, you may hear cows, dogs, sandhill cranes and a variety of other Florida birds in the background.

A working ranch has many daily responsibilities, but we will attempt to join you in chats when we can. We do read through all of the comments and appreciate your encouragement and input. We will also do our best to keep our system running smoothly for you.

We have endeavored to adhere to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission’s guidelines in this project. It is because of their recommendation that we do not specifically disclose the nest’s location.

As you avid eagle watchers know, the eagles are mostly out of the nest until there are eggs/eaglets in the nest. But, in the meantime, we will provide highlights of the eagle’s nest activities for you to watch at your convenience."

:1val: Victoria is on a branch and recently Nicholas flew in and is working on the nest. But, she is making very soft calls to him and I am wondering if she wants him to mate. He keeps looking over at her, he knows she wants something. After a long wait, I guess Nicholas wasn't up to it as he skedaddled when he noticed she had her head tucked under a wing preening and could not see him depart at 11:32!! :teehee: I heard a commotion when I was elsewhere and when I had time, I came back in. At somewhere around 11:50, they possibly had an adult BE intruder. Even though the cow cam does not have the time stamp, I was able to go back and view it from there. I believe it is Nicholas who gives chase. Now I wonder if that was an intruder earlier on the nest as I never could verify Nic's dark spots from the head views. I don't have time to go back in now, but maybe Eagle Country will address later.

:buzzybee: Victoria was in earlier this morning and immediately got to work! She removed some fluff from the rails and dropped it down into the bowl and removed a small stick from the bowl and placed it near the rails, then she tugged and pulled at some of the sticks along the rail before taking off. Their day has started!

:leaftwirl: An unusual close-up view of them at 6:49, they are together on one of the snags! Otherwise, they have been on the nest working this morning.

At 7:22, Victoria flies in with a large stick to the nest, but it hung up on the rails as she was bringing it in. She tugs on it, so she can place, but to no avail. Did not see Nicholas this visit. Read on FB of Victoria spotting an intruder near the nest tree. EC said she waited till Nicholas showed up as reinforcement and then she went in to chase off the intruder! After they chased away the intruder they remained on high alert the rest of the morning!

:15heartbeat: Nestorations continued at the nest as seen on the DVR, with Nicholas arriving with a stick at 9:21. Victoria arrives with fluff at 9:45 and they place. Nicholas flew a couple minutes later. At 9:48 he returns with a stick to place to the rails and she flies seconds later. He hopped to a branch on the left and out of sight at 9:50. Only to bring another stick in a minute later and off again at 9:52! And another Nic stick at 9:54 and out at 9:57 ... he's starting to pant! Back in 1 minute with another stick and rests 3 minutes before taking of, but still panting. At 10:04, another stick, does he know something that we don't know? Out at 10:07, I think he's tongue is dried out from placing all that wood and I hope he makes a stop at a water hole somewhere. Nic stick at 10:09 and out 2 minutes later. Nic stick at 10:13 and out 10:18. The End ... till 11:05 saw a fluff delivery. Then another stick delivery by Nic and then things were quiet this afternoon from the few peeks I could see on the DVR. Both came in at 5:57 and did some bowl work with Victoria leaving at almost 6:01 and him within the minute.

:15heartbeat: On the DVR at 6:41, you see Victoria flying in with fluff for the nest bowl. But, as soon as she lands with it, you can tell she spotted something else as she was flying in over the nest that was more important to her. She leaves the fluff and immediately goes over to the right side of the nest and begins pulling out the frog remains (I believe) from yesterday and she spent the next 15 minutes almost, consuming it. Then it's back to the bowl and rails and her delivery!

:15heartbeat: After having gone to the nest for a few short minutes, Victoria flew at 3:40 am. You could hear a noise immediately prior to her leaving that sounded the same as when one of them land on a branch on incoming, however nothing is seen, even from the cow cam.
