Possible pip on wrong end of 2nd egg? Good looks at 6:45 pm and 6:47 pm.

Edit to add: Capture per Gracie Shepard of the pip:

I posted the following under breaking news:

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer..but, we have seen this with Falcons. If the pip is on the pointy end of the egg, it is extremely difficult (but not impossible) for the the chick to rotate in the shell in order to "unzip" that shell. Also, the temporary air pocket is on the other end.

(just getting home from Mom baby sitting duties...)

Thanks you all! Kept a watch on the possible pipped egg through the rest of the evening/night and never saw any changes in the 3 times I saw the possible pipped area. Never heard any egg chirps, although B17 had plenty to say especially over > than a 1-hour period that Mom became very restless sometime after 1:00 am. She rotated and shuffled excessively and I thought maybe something going on with the egg. But not.

Not a stellar day for Mom. She stepped on B's head once, then later his whole body as her attention was on Pa possibly eating the food and she backed up and then onto B in the bowl who she could not see. Just prior to that she had been doing deep aeration in the bowl and each time she raised up with the fluff she dug up it would fall onto B and the egg. Both were covered at one point. B was able to pop its head out eventually. B has been fed a few times since, but unfortunately the egg was not seen the rest of the day. Neither Mom nor Pa have attempted to pull it back up to the top when brooding.

And then cam 2 froze at 6 something this evening and went to a black screen. It had been plagued with black screens lasting a second or two at intervals since during the night. Berry's Easter break started today and it may or may not be fixed later this weekend. In the past I have seen it return on its own after 45 minutes up to an hour or so, but not this time. The AC is currently working, but we may have to wait for Berry to return on Monday to see what is going on in the nest.

Edit to add on 3/30/24: Cam 2 came back up at 4 something this morning but continues to go to a black screen at intervals. B17 has been seen being brooded by both parents, however the egg still not seen.

Did catch a view of the egg in the cup with B17 earlier this morning (3/29) and was surprised to see the egg cup looking well-defined and deep once again. I never saw the egg again at the times I was able to view for the remainder of the day as usually one or both parents were blocking the view during a feed for B17 or lying over it. Unfortunately, cam 2 continues to black out at intervals but at least we are getting an occasional peek at Pa, Mom and B17 and know they are all doing well. Berry said they did what they could for cam 2 today and if it goes down again most likely it will be Monday till something can be done. The AC is off-air once again ...

Came in this morning early (IR still on) and Pa was on the nest. He fed B17, did not see the egg. Eventually the IR went off. Mom came in with a stick and I think she also fed B17. And that is all I saw today as cam2 went to black and has remained so the rest of the day and of course the AC remains off-air. Just hopeful they can get cam 2 back up and we don't lose it for the season. The AC they usually can get back up however it usually doesn't stay up > a day or two till it needs attention again.

Have not seen the egg since early Sunday morning. The cams were restored this morning. Pa, Mom and B17 are all doing well. Several feeds today for B17. Also, Mom has continued to completely cover B17 with fluff during aeration of the bowl a time or two today. Even Pa got a few strands atop B17 during aeration but did not cover B17. They have carried out two of the old prey items from the nest. Cam2 had a few glitches today where it went to a black screen, but usually not lasting more than a second or two. Then early this evening it went to a black screen and unfortunately has remained so. The AC remains up at this time.

Severe Weather on its way....subject to change, of course.

Tonight. Rain, High winds, possible tornadoes, possible hail, possible power outages. Should be outta here by tomorrow morning then turning cooler.

Fingers crossed it won't be as bad as it sounds.

I'm going to go backwards tonight with my report. Pa is currently brooding B17 at 3:05 am sleeping with his head tucked. I saw him for the 1st time at 2:48 am standing on the nest. He was dry. (He flew in at 2:46 am cam 2 time that could not be seen from there d/t black screen but could be seen at 2:55 am per the AC that is now 9 minutes ahead of cam 2. He was vocal and looking around and made me think he flew in because someone was messing around his nest.) Mom was wet and brooding B17. Earlier I had seen her with her wings spread, wet and protecting B17 from the rains. I saw B17 poke its head out that was wet. Have just had brief glimpses as unfortunately after Berry getting the cams back this morning, cam 2 went black again earlier this evening at about the same time it had the day before. It remained black until a little before 10 pm when at brief intervals lasting only a second or two at times cam 2 would stream again. Mom was dry at that time. The rain started a little later. So, you only get bits and pieces of what is going on. An interesting note is at 3:04 am per the AC timestamp (it is now 9 minutes ahead of the cam 2 timestamp) you can see Mom go to the left branch and flap her wings several times to rid the rain. Then shockingly at 3:06 am she flew off the left branch out the front. She normally remains on the branch when Pa relieves at night.

I did see B17 being fed several times during the day when cam 2 was up. At one point I noticed Mom trying to brood B17 atop the nest floor as it looked that the egg cup no longer had much definition as she continues to aerate and fill it up with loose fluff. This is why the 2nd egg was covered originally and B17 at times. Then later in the afternoon I saw a slight dip big enough for B17 to get in and I felt better.

I did not get to view as much today as usual because beginning somewhere between 4 and 5 am my time the tri-state area I live in was hit with tornados and straight-line winds with speeds of 92-108 mph and severe TS's. There was widespread damage across the area and then we went through round 2 this afternoon that did some damage but not as much as the 1st round. I was fortunate and left unscathed. One lady in my town was driving to work this morning and the wind blew out both passenger side and driver side windows in her vehicle. Can you imagine driving to work and encountering that? I hope she took the day off. The NWS will be arriving soon to assess what damage was from tornados and what was straight-line winds.

To continue with above post from during the night, Mom did return after a while to the nest and took over brooding from Pa but from the time that it took Pa, he did not give up gladly. He did fly out afterwards. Cam 2 remained a black screen the remainder of the night with an occasional 1-2 second or so of live streaming at intervals. It has been very difficult to follow this nest at times. Then early this morning the AC froze. Berry finally got both cams up sometime around 11 am. Pa and Mom continued with feeds throughout the day and sometimes share that chore with Pa passing off the bites to Mom who then gives to B17. Noticed B17 has pin feathers coming in on the wingtips now. Again, today Mom got a little vigorous with the aeration of the bowl covering B17.There looks to be part of a deer leg on the nest in the prey pile, but I did not get to see it come in, possibly it came when cam 2 had a black screen. So far, both cams are up and Mom is on duty.

Another day of sleeping, eating and growing for B17. So far both cams have remained up.

Both parents kept B17 fed today. Mom covered B17 with fluff during her aeration of the bowl again and Pa even added a little and some small sticks. B17 chirped the whole time and then poked through the surface once again. Another fish was brought in today. Mom on duty tonight and was disturbed by Rocky gathering nesting materials amongst the rails and sides of the nest between 2:39 and 2:44 am that ended with a wing slap to shoo Rocky away.

Another great day full of feeds and sleep for B17. Some excitement when Pa came in with a headless fish and was followed by another eagle (didn't land on tree). Mom screamed immediately and was up right away, then Pa started fussing. Soon Pa then Mom took off after the offender. Pa returned to the nest shortly (B remained pancaked till Pa returned) and then Mom returned after a while to the outer portion of the left branch. Things calmed down and all returned to their normal activities. Mom is currently on the nest. The cams have remained up and I have not seen any problems with them.

Some good excitement and some nerve wracking today. The good was experienced when B17 walked out of the bowl using his wings and joined Pa out on the nest for a while. Pa spent part of the time cozy in the bowl with B17 lounging topside of the nest floor nearby. The nerve wracking was experienced when later in the afternoon B17 came out of the bowl again and over toward Mom but got near the rails where it doesn't look as reinforced. He spent some time there before Mom moved away some and then he went toward her and away from the edge. Pa brought in a headless fish later in the day that he stood on or around for a bit as he looked to need a little time to catch his breath. B17 was fed several times today. Mom is asleep right now with her head tucked as she broods B17 for the overnight.

B17 was out and about at times today and near the rails but remained safe. Nest exchanges and feeds throughout the day. Under Mom's watchful eye tonight as she stands over B17.

A rainy day. B17 was fed, fluff brought in and Mom finally picked up the deer leg and flew out with it.

B17 is not doing well this morning and appears to be in the dying process. See 9:11-9:17 and forward. Will write up later.
