The Peregrine Fund UPDATE for Boise

We found ourselves with a happy Memorial Day Weekend surprise as the kestrel eggs began hatching Sunday. The first three nestlings appeared in rapid succession, the fourth showed up on Monday, and the fifth egg hatched sometime on Tuesday morning.

Thus we have five fuzzy, white kestrel nestlings in the KestrelCam box! The female broods newborn nestlings much of the time, as they are unable to regulate their own body temperature just yet. However, you can catch good looks at the new babies during feeding times.

If you enjoy watching the KestrelCam, please support our work by making a donation or becoming a member. And don't forget to contribute as a citizen scientist by becoming a Partner and logging your observations of kestrel behavior. These data are used for important research by the American Kestrel Partnership -- and you can be part of it!

I can see now that all 5 eggs hatched and there are 5 hungry mouths to feed.

Great catch of the chicks at Nebraska, SGB. I can't believe how big they've grown already.

And thanks for the news of the 5 hatches at Boise and RRGC, KF.

Great catch of the chicks at RRGC, SGB. I can't tell you how many times I've checked that cam to see eggs and chicks, and all I've ever seen is one of the adults covering up everything!

Nebraska Kestrels

And then there were only two . . .

I'm so glad that SGB posted those pictures of the chicks at the Nebraska nest on Wednesday. That was our last look at all five beautiful chicks: the other three chicks must have fledged late yesterday or earlier today.

Nebraska Kestrels

Mom just made a food delivery to the last chick left in the nest. I suspect this chick will fledge later today and join its siblings outdoors.

Well, it didn't take long for the last chick to fly away today. The nest is now empty. :egg15:

Pawnee Kestrels

Yesterday when I checked the nest, there were 2 kestrels left. Just now when I checked the nest, no kestrels were left. :egg15:

So all three of the cute Pawnee chicks have fledged. :egg8:

from FB
The five young kestrels have grown up fast and will leave the nest in the next few days

Check out this amazing video from earlier in the year showing a kestrel defending her space against an invading starling

:egg14: Oh my!!! That was some video of the Boise kestrel fighting off the starling that invaded her nest box earlier this year. Thanks for posting, Daniela.

Fortunately, the kestrels at Boise have had a successful nesting season so far. The chicks are almost fully grown and should start leaving the nest within the next few days.
