Hi all,
OK - I have just posted a bunch of sad and frustrating news. So here is some good news. Stanley continues to be an amazing provider, bringing in so many big fish every day that the chicks are usually stuffed by the end of the day. I thought the smallest chick would not make it a couple of weeks ago, but it is now thriving. It is growing quickly, and the largest chick is hardly ever aggressive anymore at all. This is a sign that Stanley is bringing in so much food that the "siblicide behavior" has been shut down. This picture shows the smallest chick getting right in there and getting fed. You can also see that all the chicks are "cropped out." This means that their crops, those big bulgy sacks on their necks, are grotesquely full of fish! This is a good sign, and one of the reasons they are growing so well.

The first Montana Osprey Cams Hellgate Osprey has fledged this morning! The fledgling is currently perched on a nearby pylon, while its siblings remain in the nest. Watch live at http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/2 ... e_Ospreys/

Two remaining Osprey on Hellgate nest.

The recently fledged juvenile has just returned to the nest to get its share of the fish delivered this morning.

Hi all,
And then there were two! So one chick made the first foray out into the big world. That's one small flight for an Osprey, one giant flight for Ospreykind. (thanks to Niel Armstrong). Although the chick just flew to the power line about 40 meters away from the nest, and then flew back, this is a huge step in its independence. In a matter of weeks it will put together what it is learning about flying now to fly thousands of miles south to Texas, Mexico, or points even farther south!
The chicks will spend time away from the nest, but return especially when Stanley brings in a fish.
Cheers, Erick Greene

8 settembre

Hi all,
I reviewed the "collision incident" from this morning. Although it did look really bad, I am happy to report both chicks are vigorous and seem no worse for wear. One chick seemed to be knocked unconscious for a few minutes by the collision. However, it seemed to recover fine, and is flying and yakking and eating as if nothing happened. The other chick did get sent to the penalty box for five minutes for unnecessary roughness, but all is fine now.
Cheers, Erick Greene

Has one of the Montana Osprey Cams Hellgate Osprey left for migration? This picture, from Monday 8 September, is the last time viewers noticed all 3 juveniles together on the nest. Now only 2 young have been seen together.
At higher latitudes in the U.S. the breeding season for Osprey is shorter than those living further south. Young siblings have much less time together, roughly 20-40 days (after fledging), before migrating, which they appear to do alone. The Hellgate Osprey fledged just over a month ago.
Iris and Stan continue to deliver fish to the remaining two, but it may not be long now before we see a second juvenile leave to head south. Watch live at http://allaboutbirds.org/mtosprey

Sharon Parker Buechel said: Are you SURE the one that was attacked and then pushed off the nest survived????

Bird Cams answers: Yes, after reviewing the footage the incident appeared less aggressive than we first thought. The juvenile lying on the nest appeared to be submissive, possibly remaining still until it felt safe to move. The young Osprey was seen shortly after the incident and appeared to be fine.

We know many of you watched the Montana Osprey Cams Hellgate Osprey nest this year and following the lives of these birds has touched so many of you across the world. But we were super surprised to hear about one lucky cam viewer in Texas spotting a Montana Osprey celebrity in her home town!
