Is that some food that Green Boy ate do you think? Those pictures are so sweet of him. I worry about him.

Spent the whole day getting my Dad to a couple of dr appts and picking up a few things for my Mom. Finally getting a chance to check in here and see what's going on. SusanE, thank you so much for your beautiful condolence and encouragement. It is hard to let go, and so necessary. Each year it is a struggle to lay down the sense of responsibility for them and make the transition to just enjoying them for the remaining few weeks they will be here. This year, my body pretty much took the struggle out of my hands and forced me to let go of the physical watch. But the emotional part is putting up a fight; endlessly going over the decisions made, the what-might-have-beens, and the why-didn't-I?s. But seeing that all three are doing okay as of this evening, I know it is time to let go, wave bye-bye to baby birds and open up to enjoying what I can of three young falcons before they move on to the next part of their big adventure.

Reenie and Jane, your observations and photos of Green Boy's flights today have given back 5 years of my life, I think! Have been so worried, and such a joy to see that he is okay after all. We know how intelligent these birds are, and we see evidence every day of their strong family bonds; it shouldn't surprise us I guess if he needed to grieve for his brother for a few days.

Great pics Reenie - yours and Steve's. Thanks for sharing them. And that is a green band on the leftovers - almost certainly from a pigeon. Now, off to make a couple grilled cheese sammies and some cold tea!

This is just a little bit of fun - since we did not have clearly colored bands to work with for identification, and could only get band numbers using the spotting scope if the juvies were very cooperative, I found my own way to identify the individual juvies during fledge watch - eyebrow markings. Some of the others sort of laughed at me when I started talking about eyebrows, but here is the photographic evidence! (Reenie, I borrowed your picture of Green - don't have any closeup profiles of him.



Blue has a bold swatch of tan above her eyes. Red, a subtle tan oval, and Green the barest wisp of tan curling up from the back of his eye. Of course, they still had to show their face from the proper angle to be able to tell, but to identify who is who among this year's kids, the eye(brow)s have it!

I had planned to go downtown tonight, despite also having made plans to meet friends for dinner. When Reenie called me to let me know Green had taken off, I decided to head downtown, and got there a little before 2:00. I stopped to ask where people had looked for Green, and made the decision to walk the entire parking garage of Forum Place. No dice, but I was able to look right at that chute thing where Red spent the one night. The top of that thing was an inch wide at the most, but she probably had a pretty good hold on the thing. From there I did a double check on the roof of the Fifth Street garage roof to look in between all the parked cars. While up there I spotted a pancaked juvie on the U ledge, and also on up at the railing above the window. I called Reenie to tell her, and then mistakenly turned my cell off instead of just ending the call. Anyhow, I didn't realize that Green had flown, but found him on the 11th floor ledge. He ate for maybe five minutes, but don't know if there had been a food drop or if he found something in the stash up there. Decided I'd leave to join my friends for dinner. Right before I left both adults were soaring around over my head.

This is really neat--I can see one of the kids zooming around on cam! I know its a kid because when it gets close to the ledge I can hear it screaming!

Thanks for your report, Reenie. That thunder woke me up this morning. Can't see anyone over there on the U ledge at the moment. I think I forgot to thank you for sharing Steve's great pictures on here.
