I am almost caught up on U of a but I have to address something first

I want to thank all the people that helped in the watch at U of A this year. Without you this would not have been possible. West end Bird, you coming in early morning was a god send. Without you and some of the others that came at that time, Peter and I would not have made it.

Then there was everyone else , returning and new ones, who have been become addicted, as us, to falcons. Their enthusiasm , bringing coffee, booster juice, water, and snacks, and of course themselves, made it all worthwhile. It is tiring but when you rescue 3 and know that this year, no causalities, What a Triumph. and they just did not do their shift. they found it hard to leave. We were there together , in rain and sun.

For all of this I am truly grateful . We had a windup at my place on Saturday and Gord turned up with Vinnie, our education bird, . that was special . everyone was able to hold him and meet Gord and get many questions answered.
so thank-you is not enough, but you all know how much you were appreciated. And Gord summed it up when he said, it is the watchers , that make a difference. You are truly a great group of caring people. :loveshow: :loveshow:

U of a

not quite sure how to do this but I am gong to post a few pictures of Blue and then some of red in slide show fashion
The last couple of weeks have truly been fulfilling at U of A and Weber. Blue and Red have grown so much and it amazing me how close they are. :girlluv: while Red does have amazing speed and skill , he always comes back for Blue. Last night was not exception. He came flying through and they soared to the highest of heights. Of course , Blue calling the whole time :teehee: :teehee: It will be sad when one leaves before the other but we know it will happen. they will also start coming in quiet and we wil long for the days when we thought their calling would never end.

Peter and Jean and I will continue to watch till they leave but my computer will be in computer hospital and I hope it is speedy so I will not be able to post photos for a bit. adn I know not too many are watching cams any more but this has been truly a labor of love for me. I have been slow but it has brought me joy when I see the photos again.

just a few recent shots of red

Oh, Bev, you have to know that watching these gorgeous birds in the company of you and Peter (and all of my fellow FledgeWatchers) has been the highlight of my year! Of course, I now have a serious addiction thanks to you!! LOL

Thanks so much for posting the slideshow of my Blue and for the report on how Red and Blue are doing! Sadly, I can't check in the evenings right now, but I still get out and about at lunch time to see what/who I can see. I didn't have any luck on Monday (only saw a piece of prey on a ledge), but I have high hopes for today!!

Thanks for an amazing FledgeWatch experience and for the delightful wind-up! It was fan-freaking-tastic to meet Vinnie (and Gord)!

friday august 29 Weber

Peter and i were at both sites yesterday.

We spent 3 hours at Weber and finally in came K12 , Miss E was over at Ramada and when she flew off. K12 flew over to building adjacent. centre 104.

Miss E flew back in with K12 chasing her around Ramada and over to Weber. K12 ended up on ledge of Weber and Miss E behind. As I was walking to back of building(west) Miss E flew to south side where we could see her. K12 was on back (west) on W eating,.

We decided we had seen quite a show and headed off. We had seen both adutls night before. On way to University , I spotted D01 on a aerial north east of Weber. They usually sit on one by Derrick dodge but this was a bit north east. This tells us where K12 goes
We usually find that the kids are between the roosts of both adults.

I was thrilled to see all 3

We were lucky at university also

We were going to do a quick stop. We saw blue on top of box and Red in box. We were way below on ground and as I was going to snap a few shots., Re d took off with prey in tow , over to Newton building and then blue took off following, they flew around maz area an d I could not get shots.

so we went up to p and by the time we got there Red was on a silver pillar below roof , of nest box area , soon in came blue and she went up to maz . she was eating a bit.( What else was new )I Radisson was on CP

In came a Stars helicopter. He waved to us , and after a bit. Radisson flew to roof of CP , just on corner of south west area. Red went flying over and we knew there must be some food. Now Red certainly did not need any as we saw a full crop via scope. and the kids are still vocal

We knew blue would not be far behind. sure enough over she went calling . She started eating what Red had. And he let her.
He appears to be quite the big brother. It is almost as if he is helping her.
Red slipped off corner an d ended up flying over to a building behind Newton place

we had to leave , with Radisson on east corner of Cp , REd on corner of a building est of Newton and blue eating. We knew Jean would be over but we could not stay.

As we were leaving area we heard blue above on Cp. We saw 2 up on jut and one leaving

Jean tells us that Red and Chase were chasing each other and blue was eating on Clinical sciences, so Chase msut have brought in food.

All 4 accounted for

Great day for us. Hard for Peter but he humors me.

I will try and sort out Pb to post a few shots

Golly!! Sounds like a very successful day, Bev! That's everyone accounted for and that is always good! :hapdance:

I enjoyed getting out on Wednesday night for a spot of UofA watching with you, Peter and Jean. Most enjoyable. Stayed a lot longer than I was planning, but that's the way it happens, isn't it? I'm going to stop by after work again tonight as the days are definitely getting cooler, the geese are starting to appear more and more on their southerly journeys, so I'm thinking it won't be much longer that we have the pleasure of our peregrines' company. See while the seeing is good -- that's my current motto!

Bev, thanks to you and Peter and the other fledge watchers for taking the time to come out to fledge watch, and thanks again for all the updates provided for the Clinical Sciences Building and the Weber Building. I am thrilled there were no casualties this year at the Clinical Sciences Building. I miss the fledge watch there, and all that quality time spent with fellow watchers and the falcons. I am glad it was a good year.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the updates Bev! Mike and I are heading over tomorrow evening, if the weather co-operates. I guess we can expect the little ones to be gone anytime now :(

I have some great pictures from the wind-up and some from during the watch I have been trying to figure out how to share - classes just started for me, but when I have a bit of time - going to try to figure it out again!

I will email you Bev the pictures I have, that way you are free to pick through and delete what you don't need lol

How are things at the other sites going...(My punctuation isn't this bad, my keyboard isn't working so - no question marks available lol)

Hope everyone has a great day! :egg20: :egg20:

weber.

youngster was still there as of Saturday august 30 but we did nto see her last night. but I felt she was still in area as D01 really went after a raven that entered by nest building.

As soon as I get photo bucket cooperating will post a few pciutres

U of a

blue and red were still there as of Sunday august31
last night we only saw red but that does not mean blue was not around. We got there late but will go earlier today.

I know their days are getting shorter and will leave for migration soon.

we have seen all of our kids at both sites stooping pigeons. Just do nto know if they have caught anything. But Gord says they can get small birds and insects on their journey, till they get better.

The university is on the other (south) bank of the river.

I am new to this BCAW forum, but an old war-horse veteran of the Peregrine, dating back to the 1960’s. I am passionate about all raptors but Peregrine Falcon is my ultimate, all time favorite. Here is a brief description of my passion for the species.

It all began in +/- 1960 when a Falconer brought a young female Peregrine to our school (Grade 6 or so) and explained a very bleak and uncertain future for her species, due to the widespread use of chemical pesticides. My eyes teared up & heart literally melted at this sad, sad story.

From there, our classroom lovingly named this beautiful creature Cobalt for her stunning blue / grey color. I have had a passionate place in my heart for the Peregrine Falcon ever since and have faithfully followed their recovery from the brink of extinction.

Thanks to the banning of DDT & other pesticides in Canada and the USA in the 1970’s, and to the tireless work of people like Bob Anderson & Dr. Gordon Court, and many, many volunteers like you, they have made a dramatic comeback. We have amazingly come from 1 pair of Peregrine Falcons left in Alberta in the 1970’s to an estimated 70 breeding pairs of today. A miraculous recovery, but there is still much to do.

I have edited other Raptor Resourse Project (RRP) forum pages for U of A, Weber, Bell & Genesee under the following link http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/ind ... 894.0.html as well as our own 35 page Red Deer River Naturalists (RDRN) Telus Communication Tower forum history at the link ~ http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/ind ... 859.0.html

These forum pages contain multiple day by day photos & updates of the Pefa's progress at the various nests. Keep in mind, Red Deer was without a live cam again this year and the photos & updates were from only a dedicated ground crew.
