:eggthumb: Charlo cam is on. Possibly Charlotte is there, but no official confirmation as yet. The cam was turned on last eve after an osprey sighted in the area and they immediately took down the goose extractor. Three cam views this season with P1 the original Charlo nest, P2 the goose nest with the intruder female/s that have also added eggs, and the new cam view of the Mission Mountain range.

Residents have returned!

Mom returned on the afternoon of March 27, and the male returned on the morning of March 28, 2022.

And they are baffled by baffle! Geese had laid claim to the nest and a rebar and streamer goose deterrent was placed by Boulder County on March 24. It worked! The geese could not defend the nest from the center, and Mom fairly easily displaced them after her arrival.

Boulder County removed the goose deterrent in the early afternoon

:CLAPS: Charlotte arrived @ Charlo from her migration very early this afternoon! Unfortunately, she found Char-Not on her nest and battles have continued since her arrival.

:dancegirl: In regards to both cams being down at Charlo recently:

ORI Lauren Mod • 2 hours ago
Hi All,

This is a similar update to what I posted on the goose nest cam, but wanted to add a bit more details about the Osprey cam:

I know you're all anxiously awaiting for the Osprey and the goose nest cam to be turned back on, and we are too! This feels like the absolute WORST time possible for there to be technical issues, so of course this is when there would be issues... we feel your frustration and disappointment, and feel similarly!

I have talked with both Denver and Explore, and it turns out that there is an issue with the radio transmitter for the goose cam, and the earliest we can get someone out to try to fix it is tomorrow evening. Not sure what caused the issue, if it could be related to the recent bad weather and winds or not, but I imagine we'll learn more once the Explore tech is able to get out and get it fixed. It is also a bit unclear to me how the two cams are connected, but I think they are-- I'm trying to get some clarification around that. I'm not a tech person, and wasn't involved (or present) when any of the cams were set up, so I have no idea how any of the technical side of things works.

I'll keep you all posted as soon as I hear any updates! Fingers crossed that the issue is a relatively simple fix and we can get the cams back up and running ASAP.

Huge thanks to everyone at Explore for all of the hard work, time, and energy they put into keeping these cams in working order! It's not easy to maintain and stream all of these different cams all over the world, and we so appreciate the effort that goes into allowing us to share these birds in our part of Montana with all of you viewers. Thanks Explore!

I'm also planning to go out myself to near the cams later this afternoon so I can get an idea of what's happening and share some observations. Unfortunately, due to the height and location of the platform with the goose nest, I probably won't be able to see into the nest to get a direct look at the eggs. But, I will report back with any observations I'm able to make for both platforms!

In the meantime, it is possible to hear Charlotte from the Great Horned Owl cam, as the nest is somewhat close to the Osprey platform... it's not nearly as satisfying as being able to see on the cam, but at least we can try to keep tabs on the osprey that way.

Thank you all for your patience as we try to get these cams back up and running! We appreciate having so many dedicated and caring viewers who are so invested in these birds- thank you all for being here with us!

:sum9: / :girlsad3: The Charlo cam is up and Charlie and Charlotte maintained control of their nest. Geese were on it for awhile before the cams went down. Unfortunately, a ball of orange baling twine was brought to the nest in the interim. Screen capture of twine by Pens-fan. Update from mods and their plan of action:

The dreaded baling twine that Charlie brought to the nest earlier.

ORI Lauren Mod • 42 minutes ago
Hi Everyone-

Yep, we see it too-- that dreaded ball of orange baling twine! Rest assured that all of us here at ORI are keeping a VERY close eye on it, and we're hoping that since it's a fairly tight wad the wind will blow it out of the nest, were we can safely go over and pick it up off the ground and properly dispose of it.

As many of you know, Charlie (the male Osprey) is notorious for picking up baling twine for the nest. Last year, tragically, one of the chicks became so tangled and injured that it ended up having to be humanely euthanized by a wildlife rehabber, as its injuries were too severe. We were all heartbroken. Here's the post I put together about the incident, if you'd like to read about what happened: https://www.owlresearchinst...

This year, since the Osprey pair are back on this platform, it's much easier see exactly what's happening, and to reach, should we need to get up there.

Because of all of this, we were energized to try to do what we can to help educate local landowners about baling twine. Our first step is creating an informational brochure about the hazards of baling twine, and we're also working with a local schoolteacher to put together information that can be shared with school-aged groups, with the hopes that they can take that information and organize local pick-up days and help spread the world. I'm actually working on finalizing a draft of the brochure right now... so, ironic timing, I guess, Charlie.

Once we have that material ready to share, I'll make sure to share it here with you all- we appreciate anyone and everyone helping us get the word out about the dangers of baling twine!

:eggthumb: Just wanted to say that after numerous requests by chatters the cam was finally panned to the P2 nest for Charlie and Charlotte at Charlo to see what was going on over there as the couple was visiting their P1 nest, but not really getting it into shape for nesting even though Charlotte had been back for about a month. And sure enough it looked to be incubation going on. That was several days ago. The cam for that nest had quit working sometime ago and Explore had sent a technician, but they were unable to repair at that time and never came back as their preps for the bear cams at Brooks began and took precedence over all others. It means another season of a far away view of this nest. But hey, there seems to be eggs...
