From Mod at Charlo: RknRbn Mod • 34 minutes ago • edited Great news, Charlo Osprey friends!! The mission to remove the baling twine from the nest was a success!! The twine had become wrapped around the foot of one of the chicks, but that was removed and the chick should be okay. Charlie and Charlotte returned to the nest, and both chicks were fed with the fish that Charlie was holding when the rescue team arrived. A huge shout out to ORI and the truck crew for a job well done. We can all breathe a sigh of relief that the nest is clean and the C's will carry on - business as usual! |

C12 the eldest chick of Charlie and Charlotte was euthanized D/T the extent of it's injuries. Personally, I was unaware of any GHO attacks on this nest between the 1st and 2nd twine entanglements and was surprised to see possible mention of it in the official notice. I asked about this and the mod on chat for the Charlo Nest said a GHO attack was not witnessed, but this is speculation based on the extent of the injuries. And the truth is they do not know. She went on to say that GHO attacks have been witnessed every year as a territorial dispute on perched birds (I am adding this, so that means Charlie and Charlotte). And that GHO's have never preyed on chicks in the nest here. So keep this in mind when you read the notice from the mod below. ORI Lauren Mod • 8 hours ago Hi Everyone, (this post was also shared on the Great Horned Owl Cam) It's with a very heavy heart that I share this update on C12, the oldest osprey chick who was tangled in baling twine and removed from the nest. Once the chick's leg was x-rayed, it was discovered that there were multiple serious breaks-- too severe for the chick to be a candidate for any surgery or medical intervention. The rehabilitation staff made the very difficult and painful decision to euthanize. Osprey with one leg would not be able to survive in the wild, and one-legged raptors cannot be kept legally in captivity. While the chick was tangled in baling twine and injured by it, the extent and severity of the injuries revealed by the x-ray suggest that it was attacked by a predator while tangled in the baling twine. This seems a likely scenario, with the Great Horned Owls who live nearby, and the observed attacks on the Osprey nest. For more details about what happened, please see this post on ORI's website: https://www.owlresearchinst... We've included links at the end of the post where you can learn more about baling twine, how devastating it can be for Osprey, and what we can do about it. The first steps: spreading public awareness, and organizing recycling and clean up programs. Please share this and help us spread awareness about the dangers of baling twine for Osprey. By working together, we can help make sure this doesn't happen to other Ospreys in the future. |
