Monday 12th at 17:40:
Second Osprey Chick LR2 Fledges and Gains Confidence - Loch of the Lowes osprey webcam (2021)...

After watching his bigger sister fledge a few days before, our second osprey chick LR2 took to the skies on Monday evening, after some gusty wind took his hovering effort even higher than usual and away from the nest.

He recovered well, managing to land with excited chirps back onto the nest next to his mother and sister.

His confidence increasing with every flight, the next morning LR2 did a beautiful circuit of the nest and landed (almost) text book style next his mother, NC0.

It is incredible to think in around a month's time these chicks will be making their first solo migration south.

They sure do grow up fast!

When will NC0 leave?

Image

It’s getting to that time of year when we start to speculate about the departure date of NC0 our resident female osprey.

Since LR1 and LR2 fledged a few weeks ago, NC0 has been spending less and less time on the lochside.
Instead choosing to travel around, possibly even fishing for herself.
The chicks have been spending less and less time on the web camera
but are spending most of their time on the split birch opposite the hides and splashing in the water.
For NC0 the hard work is done and she is building her strength to make her return journey south, possibly to West Africa.

LM12 is still providing fish for LR1 and LR2. Both chicks have mastered the art of begging for more food.
Fortunately for us they still associate the nest with fish deliveries
so those of you watching the webcam are still getting to see them.

So the question is when will NC0 leave Loch of the Lowes?
We’re not quite sure as we didn’t observe her exact departure date last summer due to the webcam nest being unoccupied.
From observations by the ranger team an estimated date of 3rd August was recorded.

However as we can see from LF15’s departure dates there can be a lot of variation.

2015 – 7th August
2016 – 13th August
2017 – 5th August
2018 – 8th August
2019 – 28th July

NC0 was reportedly seen yesterday on the webcam but to my knowledge has not been seen yet today.
Either way LR1, LR2 and LM12 will still be around for a few more weeks

Loch of the Lowes, Scotland: Autumn comes near...

20 August 2021: LR1 & LR2 Lowes osprey juveniles 2021

In an unusual turn of events our eldest fledgling LR1 appears to have left Loch of the Lowes on migration before the resident female. LR1 was last seen on the webcam on Sunday 15 August at 20:20.

In our previous blog (When will NC0 leave?) we speculated about her departure date. Going by the dates set by our previous female LF15 we fully expected she’d have left by now. However, this is only NC0’s second year with us, and as we don’t know her habits and patterns of behaviour yet she’s still giving us surprises!

At the time of writing this blog, NC0 was last seen yesterday (Thursday 19 August) at 17:55. So we don’t think she’s left on migration just yet.

Listen to a rare concert on BBC 3 >

Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita, harpists originally from Wales and Senegal respectively. Of course you may or may not know that Osprey Mum Telyn (Welsh for 'harp'), the third Queen of the Dyfi, is named Telyn because of this duo.

The two harpists did a concert for the Dyfi a few years ago and wrote a lovely piece called 'Clarach'. While Clarach was only the seventh Dyfi chick hatched since the Dyfi Osprey Project began and the fifth to fledge, she was the very first Dyfi chick known to have returned to Wales and the UK. The 'Clarach' piece also acknowledges the summer and winter homes of UK Ospreys and of the original homes of the two harpists, also the return of Ospreys to the Welsh landscape after hundreds of years...

Live from the BBC Proms: Award-winning duo harpist Catrin Finch and West African kora player Seckou Keita in an atmospheric evening of cultural exploration.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London
Presented by Tom Service

Catrin Finch, harp
Seckou Keita, kora

She plays the harp, he plays the West African kora (harp-lute) and together they present a unique meeting of cultures and a musical partnership of rare empathy.

Whether influenced by Bach or by nature and migration, Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita draw on their connections as well as their distinctive roots, the two instruments sharing ancient associations of storytelling and courtly entertainment.

The pair have garnered awards from fRoots and Songlines as well as no fewer than three accolades at the 2019 Radio 2 Folk Awards. Catrin Finch and Seckou Keita take over the Royal Albert Hall in an atmospheric exploration that embraces the worlds of folk, non-western and contemporary music in their Proms debut as a duo.

In addition to that beautiful harps! I remember the Clarach theme on Dyfi's amazing banding video and listened to the concert till piece n°11 (Beethoven- Diabelli Variations, op. 120) .. I will continue in the afternoon: It's a must.
