Toledo update regarding request to ODNR to remove eggs....via FB

“No, ODNR will not intervene. We no longer actively intervene in nests because the peregrine is no longer a state listed species. It is also relatively late in the breeding season and there is less and less certainty that the birds would renest, even if the eggs were removed. A federal permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service would also need to be sought to do any kind of manipulation with the eggs. The peregrines will sit until they decide to give up. The eggs may not have hatched because of infertility or because something happened in the development process. Lack of success of a pair when they are inexperienced, as is suspected in this case, is not unusual. As they gain experience, new pairs often have greater success in future years.”

Toledo's response to FB followers:

TPP here - I have to wonder why Michigan is apparently still banding its peregrines. Are the birds not listed as protected in Ohio, yet are so scarce just a few miles north that they receive the protection? Inquiring minds honestly want to know.

Bowling Green- a very “glarey “ view this afternoon. I guess Bowling Green is out of the range of the worst of the smoke. Sun is shining brightly. Current temperature there is 76 degrees F., and the chicks are choosing to sit in the front of the nestbox, where the sun can shine on them. Well plus I an see a parent out on the perch too…In east central Ohio, where I am, it’s been very hazy and cool today- we barely made it to 70 degrees F.
