I've seen Newman at GSB mate with any female who came by.
That's Hoppy's egg. Lena will lay when she's good n ready

Hope at Cathedral had this scenario.
Terzio raised her first 3 and his one

:7snowflake:

I agree bev. The female that laid this egg is not the one that is visiting in the last week. New female, same male. He will keep on trying to care for the egg. We all remember Gulf Tower Pittsburgh 2010 when Dori ousted Tasha after 2 eggs were laid. Dori added 3 of her own, Louie cared for the first 2 during courtship and all 5 hatched.

Have kept cam up here. No doubt in my mind that egg belongs to this male, and that this is a new female.Male would not be incubating if it was not his.

Experts will never come out and state what they cannot see directly , but a lot of us have seen this same scenario, at other sites over the years, .

It is a story in progress

And as the 3 of you can see, I lean toward this female as having ousted his mate, but was very curious as to Dr. Sharpe's thoughts and wanted to share that here for all interested in what he had to say. And Shepherd, if you are 100% with bev, then that will not be Lena who will lay when she is good and ready as Lena would no longer be here. At least we can see signs of him bonding with her now, whoever she is ...

Hoppy is on his egg a lot - more than I'd expect

:sham3: And here we go:

Screen capture by Cali Condor who noted: "She now appears to have some brown-ish (sun bleached?) streaks on her remiges and rectrices."

To which Dr. Sharpe replied:

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
The brownish feathers could mean she is a 2020 hatch.

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
Or a 2019 bird that hasn't completed molting of all the juvenile feathers.

And further clarified to another comment with:

Institute for Wildlife Studies Mod
Young peregrines have brown feathers and only get the black feathers after molting.

Someone who has watched this cam other years thinks this is the original female

The cam is so dirty and so close up and the lighting so poor we cant tell much at all

The male is still keeping the egg warm enuf that it should be viable
I bet he's confused

:1val: The female got him off the egg as usual, but interestingly, she remained standing to the left of the bowl area as the cam faded to black. Is she spending the night ...

They pulled the cam back a little this eve and here is a capture by Cali Condor that shows the difference in their coloring well and how young she is.

And a couple more by Cali Condor from earlier today when the sun was bright;

MYSTERY SOLVED
March 26, 2021
Cali Condor - Explore - went back thru her photos to compare.
Conclusion - its LIKELY the egg was laid by a young passing female.
This current female may be a 2 year old.
What will become of Solo if this female doesnt lay unknown.

The GSB male chose a 2 year old also - no egg there yet.

thanks Shep.

I have been watching. she is not an aggressive female like some.2 year olds are perfectly capable of nesting, .. I knew she was very young.

The rest is a guess , at best.

:15heartbeat: The male was on egg duty as the sun rose this morning, unsure if he was there the whole night. He has already left and come back twice this morning without her assist. Have not seen her so far this morning.

:15heartbeat: Even though the female shooed him off the egg earlier this evening, the male slipped back in and was incubating the egg as the cam view went to blackness. He may be staying on all night now, I just don't know.

:15heartbeat: At 19:40, the female came in and directly the male left. She left at 19:42. The male slipped back in at 19:44 and at 19:44:51, you can see him line up his brood patch before he goes down on the egg, probably for the night. (It is so dark, you can barely see this.) When darkness falls at night and the light comes up in the morning, he is there on his egg here lately.

Honestly, cat, I'd rather it not hatch.
If it does I dont know if the chick'd survive.
The female shows no interest in nesting
The male cant care for a chick and himself alone

To us an egg is just an egg
but losing a lil live chickie-poo is too sad

:nervous:

Yeah, I feel the same way you do. Actually, there are several tiercels that I know of (and you probably do too), that fed the chicks due to lose of mom and were quite successful at it. There's only one. My problem would be worrying about whether the chick would be safe around the mother. Stranger things have happened when peregrines are involved! :girlcrazy:

I have seen this young female , almost incubate. I will check to see if I did video. I think she is a yearling, just by watching her an d her actions and looking as closely as I can at her feathering
