A new species of bird from around 68 million years ago has been discovered on the island of Madagascar, and its unusual beak could give new insights into how modern birds evolved.

:egg16: We all like first times things are seen in the world. So here is an article by ktvz.com on a condor at the Oregon Zoo who double-clutched while her egg was hatching:

:sorrow: :sorrow: Sullivan County shares it's upper border with Vigo County in the state of Indiana (Terre Haute is in Vigo County).

Posted: Mar 30, 2021 / 03:24 PM CDT / Updated: Mar 30, 2021 / 03:24 PM CDT

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. — Indiana Conservation Officers are now investigating the shooting deaths of two juvenile bald eagles in the same area of the state.

Reward offered for tips on killing of bald eagle in Vigo Co
Officers located the second juvenile eagle after responding to a call to a rural area in northern Sullivan County along County Road 800 West, approximately 8 miles west of Shelburn. As part of the investigation, the body of the eagle was recovered from a tree and found to have been shot. Officers believe the shooting occurred in early January.

The first juvenile bald eagle determined to have been shot was discovered in a southern Vigo County tree on March 10. Officers determined that juvenile eagle was killed from a gunshot to the breast area.

A joint $2,000 reward is being offered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Indiana Turn-in-a-Poacher, Inc. to anyone with information leading to conviction of the responsible party/parties. Contact DNR Law Enforcement Central Dispatch at 812-837-9536 or the TIP hotline at 1-800-847-4367 (TIP-IDNR).

Devils Tower climb routes closed to protect nesting falcons

Image
NPS photo
"GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Some rock climbing routes on Devils Tower in northeastern Wyoming have been closed to protect nesting falcons.

The closures, which remain in effect until young falcons fledge, give peregrine and prairie falcons an undisturbed area for courtship, nest selection and nesting, according to the National Park Service.

The annual closures also protect climbers. Falcons sometimes fly aggressively at people to protect their nests, the Gillette News Record reported.

The closed routes are between those named "Good Holds for Godzilla" and "Accident Victim" and will be listed at a climber registration kiosk near the Devils Tower National Monument visitor center. More than 100 other climbing routes remain open.

Devils Tower is an almost 900-foot igneous rock formation known for its role in the 1977 science fiction film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."

All climbers must register with park officials before attempting to climb the tower."

That is amazing. But I think it is likely an escaped bird. Maybe held illegal and not reported missing?
The picture with the attacking small birds (red-winged blackbirds???) is beautiful.

I found it very moving. The way it is written is )almost) poetic.
