Sorry Guys!!

When this happens to you, is it for a few seconds, minutes...how long does it last?

Last time we had a problem with this, is when we were getting bombarded with bots and crawlers. I was able to go in and block about 30 of them..and the issue stopped. I'll have to do a deeper dive into the issue when I have more time...possibly this coming Thursday..

In the meantime, if you get this error, please make note of the time and duration...then I can check forum error messages to see if anything strange was going on...plus, I'll have more info if I need to contact support.

Thanks.

Footnote: Resource limit refers to CPU usage, Physical memory usage, disk space usage, etc. As of this second, BCAW is using less than 2% of any of those...After research, there is a very minute chance that Resource Limit Reached has absolutely nothing to do with BCAW at all..but a culmination of all active websites on the same server that we are on...if one overloads, then it affects everybody else on that server...If that is indeed the problem, then ACENET (our hosting company) may need to tweak something..who knows..

The 1st time it happened to me, I kept trying to get in and from memory I noted it was about 15 minutes before I was able to get in. This last time, I only tried a time or 2 and waited a few minutes before attempting. After my wait from my 1st unsuccessful attempt was 20 minutes. So, for me it is about 15-20 minutes.

Quick update...

BCAW is being bombarded by petalbot. This is not a bad bot, but one that crawls a website with many crawlers (I've counted 20 so far). There are several other bots/crawlers I am finding..(2 that I thought I had blocked) These may be contributing to the Resource limit issue..

If you'd ever like to see for yourself..just scroll to the bottom of the index page and look at the "Who is online" section. At the time of this post, there are 1 user (me) and 109 "guests". A lot of those guests are crawlers and bots..some are just random people like you and me searching for forums...a few are your legit search engines..(bing, FF, etc.)

You can click on "Who is online"..then click on "Display Guests". That will display which IP addresses are searching the forum..its those bot IP addresses I need to weed out and block..such as the petalbot. Another is the magpie crawler. Both of these are currently indexing multiple forum areas and are known to be resource hogs. Its bots/crawlers such as these, while not bad, could eat up Resources and trigger the error message some of you are getting...

I'll start working on blocking some of these later this week..to see what happens.

:egg19: Thanks, sky!! Edit to add: I checked it out and there was me and 80+ guests. I could not see their IP addresses though. Perhaps admin and mods can see.

Don't have time to work on this today, unfortunately..

Just now happened to me from 1:57 am CDT-2:01am.

Resource Limit Is Reached
The website is temporarily unable to service your request as it exceeded resource limit. Please try again later.

There are 2 registered users and 0 hidden users online
There are 72 guest users online

Checked the above after I posted and the 2 registered users were Google Bot and me.

I have just blocked hundreds of bots, crawlers, and spiders. Hopefully I didn't block "you"...of course, if you aren't reading this, I won't know!!

At one point this morning, there were over 50 "bytespider" crawling at the same time. It looks like the main ones I have blocked are coming from China.

I have a few more to go: AhrefsBot and SemrushBot are my next targets.

If we have issues after this, then its back to the drawing board and off to ACENET support.

At one point this morning, we were up to 110 "guests"...as of this second, we have 29.

Thanks, sky! No problem coming in this time. There are 26 guests and me which seems more reasonable...

Edit to add...spoke too soon. Came back in at 9:52 pm CDT and got the usual message however was able to get back in a minute later at 9:53. There were 27 guests and me. I noticed one was viewing BCAW Donations which seemed a little off to me.

The reason I am bringing this up is in the upper left, corner on my screen the connection to BCAW is "not secure" for me and am wondering if this is the same for others here. One recommendation it gives when I click on it is: "Your connection to this site is not secure." Underneath this it says: "Don't enter any sensitive information on this site (for example, passwords or credit cards). It could be stolen by attackers.

Yep...I don't think getting rid of so many bots has solved the issue...I may have to wait until Monday to contact support...no time until then.

"not secure"...is because of the images. We use various public pic hosting sites...that could be the reason. No personal data, other than forum passwords, are stored on the forum..heck, and even we have to re-enter passwords every time we log in...which is a pain. I'm finding that I have to do that now with almost every website I go to. I understand financial institutions, but Kroger app too? Come on..somebody gonna steal my digital coupons?..LOL

And it happened to me again a few minutes ago lasting a couple minutes. Will no longer report each time nor wait when it happens. Will come back another day and do summary posts when it does let me in. Hope this gets worked out.

Thanks ladies...sorry this is still happening...and unfortunately, we're gonna have to put up with it a tad longer. I literally have no time..especially this week..(I won't bore you with the details)

Problem solving with support can take minutes...or hours..depending on numerous factors. I have neither this week.

So, if we can "grin and bear it" for a tad longer, I'd appreciate it!!

:thanku

It continues to happen over the last week and as late as tonight. One thing new for me is it got me going between topics earlier this week whereas previous I had only encountered when trying to sign in.

Thanks Swinwk...

Still trying to figure this out with support. They're giving me some tech mumbo jumbo that makes no sense to me....and wanting me to disable stuff that we don't even have...LOL

this is gonna take a while...
