Synchronized wing exercise again.
Image
One of the parents arrives and brings a fish.
Image
The fish is big but only limited interest in eating. Mostly the parent participates.
Image
Down below the nest two people push a rubber dinghy upstream on the river.
Image
Wing exercise again.
Image
And a big jump from one side of the nest to the other.
Image
And another big jump.

Two of the young ospreys fledged today :sum9: The third one seems to be still reluctant to fledge but eager to exercise.

Today I was watching many take-offs and landings performed by the juvies. One of them seemed to be rather reluctant to fly, but finally did try it, although returned quickly to the nest. They were not banded this year so it is difficult to tell them apart.

There has been a change for the worse at this nest. There was a VERY strong storm with large hail in Calgary on Saturday or Sunday. Dad has not been seen since then. Mom started to bring in fish today. ... One small one and one big one. Ground report is that there is a male with fish in the trees around the nest. HOwever cam watchers doubt from the behavior that it is dad...time will tell. There are pages of reports at Hancock Wildlife Foundation. Jazzel some have wondered what your take is on this event.

All three chicks continue to fly in and out of the nest. The river has cleared up finally, too.

Mom has begun to bring fish into the nest and at least 2 of the chicks have followed her to the sandbar. Have not seen dad at the nest. So far 4 fish have been brought in and at least 2 chicks are well fed. The two that have been seen to have less both had good PS today so things are looking up. Mom is going to be one tired momma feeding these 3.

Hi Kitten

And a picture showing how the nest was covered by hail (courtesy of BET).

Today, at 9:16 a.m. Mom brings a big fish – as golden1 mentioned above.
Image
There is a commotion among the chicks; one of them gets the fish and later another has its turn.

Some contradictory information.

I heard, from a local CBC radio program, an interview with a Calgary ZOO representative who responded to many people’s concerns about the ospreys (apparently, they received many phone calls). He said that another male osprey appeared and started dropping fish on the nest without even landing on it. He said that it might be a “normal” behavior for a male who wants to bond with the female to acquire his own territory (and an exceptionally good one) for the next season.

But the Hancock Wildlife forum does not report anything like that.

I could not watch the nest all the time but I noticed that the chicks started flying a little bit in the evening. I did not see them flying earlier during the day. And I have not seen Mom since late morning, nor any other adult osprey.

One is exercising,

Another is landing,

The third one is landing.

There were three fish deliveries so far today (before noon local time):
6:13 - small fish,
7:50 - another small fish,
10:22 - big fish - pic below:
Image
It is possible that all three chicks had their turn on this one.

Reading through the posts at Hancock there were 6 fish delivered on Friday. When I have watched on Wed and Thurs I only saw one adult and it landed with fish. The cam is down today due to a short power outage in the area. It may not be back on until Monday when workers return to work. Mom has been doing an outstanding job. She left the area last year on SEpt 6. She may get these chicks ready to migrate by then. It is hard to be sure of what is happening around the nest when our cam view limits what we see. I am encouraged that mom has been successful with her fishing and all o's have ps'd.

I have seen adult fly bys by the nest, but no fish drop. But I have not watched continuously so.....

The cam was finally turned on about 8:04 this morning. The chicks seemed to be in good shape. There were several fish deliveries. 3:55 p.m. one of the chicks tried to fish. He was not successful (probably), but this is a progress! This slow-motion video shows this event:

Yesterday, on a 16th floor balcony of a residential highrise, downtown Calgary, a young osprey was found. He was apparently unable to take off. See picture, by Rick W, HWF forum.
Image
The bird may or may not be from the osprey nest at the ZOO. (There are at least 6 osprey nests in Calgary; the young chicks were not banded), but for the last two days only two juvie ospreys were seen at that nest. The bird was taken to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. He didn't seem to have significant injuries and is expected to be released soon (hopefully).
