:egg8: We got a peek of Mystic on the stills on Wednesday, but I haven't seen her or Mo on the cam for a while. I was wondering about the nestbox - will it need to be "sanitized" since a chick with trich lived there?

Nothing caught in the stills for a few days...so not much to report... Also, I have no time to get to Canton unfortunatley, so this year is a wrap, unless C&C have made it there recently. The boy's will have begun hunting by now and will have moved to the AEP tower, if anyone goes to watch.

Here is a Wikipedia version of how Trich is transmitted:

Transmission of the parasite from one bird to another occurs in one of three ways:

1.Infected parent feeding young
2.Contaminated drinking water
3.Infected bird is a prey meal for another bird (raptors most commonly)

In pigeons, transmission occurs when infected older birds (carriers) feed "pigeon milk" to newly hatched squabs. Adult birds, which do not show signs of disease, may carry the infection for a year or more and are a constant source of infection for their young.

Turkeys and chickens likely become infected through drinking water or food contaminated with feces, saliva or crop secretions. Because the trichomonads do not survive for long outside the bird, transmission must occur rapidly. Wild pigeons and other birds may be an important source of introducing the infection to domestic birds.

The third method of transmission is more common to birds of prey. An infection may be established in a raptor that has fed on an infected prey bird.

Arrived downtown around a quarter to 7 to find Mystic on the PB antennae... The two juvies were up top of the AEP tower. Mo was MIA... After only a few minutes Mystic left her perch on the PB antennae and flew over us...showing in detail how her body feathers are starting to molt into brand new feathers for the year...Her mother and grandmother's genetics are showing in the rusty/peachy feathers on her normally white breast feathers...Once she finishes the summer molt she will look like a different falcon until those feathers fade out over winter to the white.. So, very soon she will be easily distingished from Mo, since he tends to have white breast feathers even after summer molt... Mystic looped around the Key building and soared back to the Northeast side of the CC, landing and we did not see her the rest of the watch....
Meanwhile, The boy's took off..... after whining a few times... and one caught something that appeared to be either a swift or a bat...and took a good long time to administer the Coup de gras.... which means he only recently has begun to catch small prey and has yet to learn how to "end it"... After he did though, and after he ate, his brother, who was perched a few rungs above him, flew down to see if there was any leftovers... the one who had ate, took off north, and disappeared far in the distance. We then left the garage and when we got down to the CC parking lot, a peregrine flew over us and hunted around the church...it came back and landed on the PB building. Much to my suprise, it was the juvie we saw heading off!!! The other brother was still on the antennae just to the side of the PB building... We heard a whine from behind us and there was Mo... sitting proud on the Huntington antennae... We then left...happy to have seen the entire family... A good evening watch it was!!

:hithere: Thanks for that report, and the pictures of our beautiful family. It's good to know Echo and Meek are progressing nicely - and that Mo is being allowed to interact with them this year...

:egg19: Hi Bev, Matrix has been downtown a couple of times, and commented on the Face Book page that he feels the boys are on their own now.... Fly high and good luck, Echo and Meek!!

I am so glad the boys did well. with ever success comes a little heartache but we must always be grateful for the successes.

I will try and get in to facebook in the next while and catch up :loveshow:

:egg8: Well, I decided to stop at "Ye Olde Parking Garage Roofe" in Canton after a dr. appt... For the first half hour it was just me and an (apparently) lonely pigeon. But then who should roll in but fellow falcon watchers Cheryl, Chad and Ray!! And of course, almost on cue as we gathered with cameras and binoculars, Mo soars over our heads, flying over to the Chase building where the nest box is. But Mo flies over to a lower ledge, near a row of windows. He positions himself so he can peer directly in the window, and there he stays for 15 minutes.... Why would a wild peregrine falcon sit on a ledge and stare into a room through a window? Could someone possibly be leaving goodies for him? ( Well, they blew it tonight) I had to leave to meet my husband, and I know Cheryl, Chad and Ray were hoping Mystic would come around too. Hopefully Chad or Cheryl will post some pictures of Mr. Mo staring in the window here, or maybe on the facebook page....

Watch report:

Watch with Susan, Cheryl and Ray. Mo was perched on the north then east side of the CC and he flew over us as we began our watch. None of us were prepared for his low flight over us, and we like to think he was checking us out too, but most likely he was checking for the resident doves that nest just over the edge of the parking garage. He flew up to a ledge near the cubby and then "Mosied" over to a close window for some sunbathing. he later took off North off into the distance. After a bit Ray said isn't that a falcon? and sure enough there was one where Mo had been. Turns out it was Mystic, and she sat in the evening sun, preening and looking around. As it began to grow dark we went ground level to check to see if Mo was "around the corner" of the building, and as it always goes, we got to ground level, and sure enough, he came zooming in from the south... (It is as if he knew we were not in the best position for pics) He landed above Mystic on the column ledge and suddenly a third peregrine (Juvie) came in, chasing Mo off. He zoomed around the far side of the CC and we didn't see him again. Mystic came out from inside the cubby to the ledge corner and quietly watched the juvie above her. The juvie made his way to the edge of the ledge and after seeing Mo was gone headed west checking out the buildings as he went, then headed toward the AEP tower, but swung back to the PB antennae. He sat there looking quite full from a recent meal. We checked for Mo all around the CC building then headed back up to the garage to leave. The juvie left silently when we were not looking and Mystic flew over to the opposite rear ledge in the cubby. Called it a night and felt good to see both adults, but the presence of the juvie, in August, has us wondering!
