Great posts today! 2 at nestbox now. One arrived to retrieve the prey that was stashed in the NB & another arrived & jumped on the NB roof (I think that was Nettie cause she's likes sleeping on the roof). While I was typing this post, it looks like another juvie might have arrived & is picking at the prey. I think the one who was originally eating went to the boy cave. The chatters are confirming that one went to the boy cave. Its dark so I can't really tell.

Mark Nash Reports:

July 21st - 2014

We do have some sad news to report. Yesterday, I was contacted by the Kitchener Waterloo humane society with reports of a downed peregrine that we assumed might be one of the young fledglings that was produced at the Sun Life nest site this season, and with only one surviving fledgling, we expected the worst. There is good news and bad news to share.

The good news, I asked for a photo of the birds leg bands to confirm the peregrines identity, and it turns out to be a sub-adult female, banded with Yellow and Red tape over its Silver USFW band and a Black 95 over Green BA. It's not one of the resident KW peregrines!!

The bad news, is that the peregrine has some serious injuries to the wing & wrist along with other obvious evidence of punctures very consistent to wounds sustained in battles with another raptor. The sub-adult peregrine female turns out to be a peregrine produced in Rochester New York in 2013, one named Voyager, donning a Black 95 over Green BA coloured leg band.

Rudy Kruppa from the CPF was kind enough to pick up Voyager from the KW Humane society and drove her to team members of the Owl Foundation that met him half way in between the long drive between Kitchener and Vineland. We are waiting for updated news on her status.

We have our fingers crossed for her.

A huge thank you to the KW humane society for calling us so quickly and to Rudy for picking her up and driving her to medial assistance so quickly!!

Again, another fantastic team effort of caring people!!!!

We are waiting on reports from the KW group as to the status of the resident adults at the KW nest site to see if there were any life sustaining injuries with them.

Fingers crossed that there was no serious injuries sustained on their end.

I feel like I need a jumping for joy emoticon and a crying emoticon.....

I'm happy to hear that she's accounted for, yet sad that she's been injured.

When I see her picture, I can totally see Beauty and Dot.Ca in her! I always wonder if any of DC's offspring will inherit the heart.

I hope she heals wells, and I am thankful she has been found and is being cared for.

Thank you for sharing.

So sad to hear this ..doesn't sound good but hoping for the best. Bill and I spent an entire evening with Voyager late last summer. Ginny (forum member) was visiting from NJ and there were several of us that sat by the FCT watching and photographing her and, if I remember right, she was the last to leave the area.

So sad to hear this.... She was such a beautiful girl.

Thankfully she did not linger and suffer longer. Also, I am grateful it was recognized she is wild and captivity is no life for a peregrine who has lived free. Just my personal opinion....

Given her injuries I agree on the decision they made but I am still gutted about it and I was quite shocked about the news. I was hoping that it wasn't as serious as they said - often times when an injured bird comes in the injuries look worse than they are and I really prayed that our girl would be one of the ones that defied the odds but it wasn't to be.

She had a year of freedom and was fortunate enough to live a 'falcon life'. And she was let go with dignity surrounded by caring people so that is something.

She brought so much joy to people, she was a great ambassador for falcon conservation and she grew up in a protective family with fantastic parents. So at least she had a good life for the short time she graced us with her presence. It still sucks though, it really does. :sum6:

I'm heartbroken over the loss of our dear Voyager but am so glad she was with caring people in the end. I agree with you..it really sucks. :tissue:

:sorrow: She was a beauty for sure, & she flew like she was meant to. She flew quit far also so she had a venture before she was taken.
She was found, and at OWL so we know she was as comfortable and with loving people at the end.
RIP sweet Voyager.

Some beautiful thoughts expressed here & I can't say anything that could compare, so I'll just say that its a real shame this happened & I'm just glad she was with caring people at the end. :sorrow:

Jenny, from the DEC, reported that Luzerne, the female that was hanging out at the Seneca Tower Apartments with a tiercel named Veteran, was found dead and brought into the DEC Offices. There are no other details at this time.

More sadness.

Another sad loss this week..same age as Voyager too. I hope there was no foul play but, knowing the DEC, we'll probably never know the cause of death. Fly free, Luzerne. :sorrow:

I want to share what Larry, who named Voyager, posted on our Forum today:

Last year I had the privilege of naming one of the baby falcons at the Times Square Building in Rochester NY.
The name I chose for her was 'Voyager'. To me, it emphasized the adventurous nature of the peregrine falcon, and the best in spirit of people when they are moving forward with life to whatever our destiny is.
I learned today, that as often happens in nature, Voyager had to be euthanized in Canada after an apparently savage battle.
One in five peregrines makes it to year two. Voyager did not make it, but in her time, I'm sure, she carried on the spirit of the peregrine, and contributed her part in this recovering species' proud legacy and awesome future.

Thank You for sharing this Kris. We need to remember that she got to fly free for at least that is positive.
