I am heartbroken. I have been following this nest and had hoped for a better outcome!

:sorrow: I just got home to see this horrible news....the very outcome I feared. Our Christmas eaglet...gone. Killed and carried off by the female. I am heartbroken after watching so many yrs of nurturing at this nest. My heart aches for Romeo, who tried so very hard to keep it together these past 2 wks. He is still incubating the remaining infertile egg as I write this. What an incredible eagle Dad he is.

My condolences to all those that follow this nest and to those at AEF, who did such a wonderful job through a difficult time. Fly high and free NE20. If Juliet lives, I pray that Romeo reunites with her, wherever she may be. If she has passed, may her last hatchling be in her tender loving care and under her comforting wing as they cross the rainbow bridge together. :15heartbeat:

Here and on RRP its a comfort that several express sorrow and other emotions. I swing back n forth blaming Romeo for being so irresponsible, and being angry at him, and realizing the chick never had a chance. In my heart that chick was not a Christmas miracle.

I draw on past observances at other nestcams, and go to NBG. Dad Norfolk seemed to have several lady friends, and has mated and raised young with his daughter. AEF blog mentioned him. Bilogists say male eagles will mate with non-mates. We dont know what Romeo did in his - spare time.

Someone posted Juliet was at least 16 years old, I think?
Eagles easily live up to 30 years.

:sum7: On RRP one thinks they should shut the cams down for the season. I agree.
Another thot its good it ended fast.

Nadia, Rainbow Bridge is a lovely poem.
We know many who have crossed over it.

The tragedy of NE20 at the NEFL eagle nest a few hours ago is triggering lively debates on eagle behaviour and whether we are ready to accept what we are seeing. When eagle cams capture this behaviour, viewer reaction is often intensely emotional. Kleptoparasitism—obtaining food by stealing meals from other animals—or cannibalism, as we have just seen at NEFL -is a relatively common feeding strategy, and can be brutal to watch.

Are we ready for this? What do you think? Come and join the debate.

loza LOL!!! Murderess

NEFL mods arent sure it was Missy who heisted the hatchling.

I know birds of prey take other birds young all the time.
Thats happened on cam with a pair of osprey.
owl got em both

Romeo didnt care - he didnt guard the chick
he seemed irresponsible - but that applies too much humanity I spose.

Juliet may mate next season with another male - and we will never know.
She can find lots of males in Alaska! You wanna tweet her?

Yeah peeps go nuts. We think what we see is 'OURS'
MINE! LEAVE! ... LOL .. intended as humor ...

What happened is normal when there are so many eagles.

Oh my Loza, your pics of today look like a new female. The female at the nest yesterday morning and the past few days had dark speckling on her tail with a dark tail tip. I wonder how many females there are? I had a feeling something was up yesterday afternoon when Romeo returned to the nest with a fish and no one followed him. Eagles were soaring overhead. Females battling it out? I'm curious to know what the eagle looks like that took the hatchling.

As an aside, I realize that many of us are upset and entitled to our opinions, but I find the commentary laying blame upon Romeo to be unsettling and inflammatory. This is nature. We do not know all that is happening off cam. Romeo could not be at the nest 24/7 while doing it all alone - hunting, eating, stocking the pantry, incubating, protecting the eggs/nest, and protecting his territory. To my eyes, he was dedicated to the eggs in what was a war zone with multiple females battling it out around him. For all we know, he had to also engage with intruding males. I would just ask that we be respectful.

Nadia, you're right

From the discussion at
it follows that this young female is not a killer.
There is a suggestion that this may be Delilah from this nest 5 years ago.
Three women are seen there

Thank you, Loza. I am watching Christian's video now. He always adds perspective.

so sorry to all who follow this nest. :15heartbeat:

I did not think this would happen/
just my 2 cents for all it is worth.

I do not think the one who took the eaglet was the one who has been here with Romeo. I do believe there is more than one more female around. without Juliet there, there may be several other eagles vying for a site. The strongest will prevail.

those on ground patrol, know what is happening. I do not know how much they have shared. they do not want ot spark, panic. understandably.

Romeo is a great male eagle. He is not to blame. We cannot see beyond the nest. as Nadia said, there may be another male in the mix also. He may have thought the female that was somewhat attentive , would watch out or he may have been hunting , as that is necessary, or he may have been trying to lead other eagles away form the nest.

Romeo has to place trust in a female at some point.

This is a great site, and it would be shame to turn the cam off. I thought the cam was for learning, as with the cam , they can find out what is happening. There is time for
Romeo to start again with a new female or just take the time to try and find another mate.

I am not good at watching adversity, but that is by choice , but when I am monitoring my nest sites, I cannot just turn off because I do not like what is happening. I am a volunteer to monitor, good or bad. And last year at my sties, there was not a lot of joy. Bu tone must always be open to moving forward.

Juliet has been a part of this site for so long an d much loved. I also hope is safe and healing somewhere. It cloud just as easy have been Romeo.
please respect the site and the monitors here.
Merry Christmas season everyone

I hear you nadia and bev
all people grieve in different ways
some with tears, some with anger
Look up 'Stages of grief'
They are NOT sequential - people differ
My reactions to deaths of friends have differed
https://www.recover-from-grief.com/7-st ... grief.html

I agree the site is beautiful
Romeo will choose a new mate

I've seen plenty mate changes in the past years

No no no, she is just being an eagle, doing what nature and instinct tell her to.
Of course it a sad string of events, but PLEASE do not project human emotions and behaviours onto these eagles.

Ferenz, that looks like the female that was present on Dec 24 and a few days before. It is hard to make out her tail markings in your photo. Would you be able to enlarge it? The female I am referring to incubated one night. She has dark tail tips and lots of speckling on the tail. Her tail feathers were not in the best condition and she has a small white area on the R side of her beak. I am at work right now, but I just peeked at the cam and it appears that there is a different female perched in the nest tree. I can't keep up with them. :girlcrazy:

NEW PAIR
Dec 28, 2018

Romeo is gone. Did he find Julia and take a vacay?

I guess new love is in the air.
I went over to cam site - its chat time.
They say a NEW pair has taken the nest
They are burying the egg with fresh grasses
Did they lose their nest and young in a storm?
My guess is she will lay eggs here.

It was mentioned that one of the visiting females was Delilah.
News to me, I dunno
