We have eggs in downtown Salt Lake City!
A few weeks ago I received an email from an observer that they had seen peregrine pair mating and using the nest box on One Utah Center located at 201 S. Main St. This box hasn’t had any activity since it had a failed attempt in 2018. There are cameras in the box but no access to the public (yet). We have confirmation as of Thursday of two eggs. We guess there may be more now but Bob Walters will confirm. This attempt is one month earlier than 2018 and we hope that will bode well for less heat exposure and more success. The box has been painted white, where it was black in 2018. Further updates can be picked up on our Facebook group, Salt Lake City Falcons.

Hello, I have some updates.

Hi Team,

I have some bad and good news to share. First, Bob got a message yesterday through building security that an adult Peregrine was hit by a car on 200 South on Saturday and killed. Not sure why an adult would be in the road unless glanced off a building first or possible interloper attacked by one of our pair? Doubtful though. The bird was turned over to police who got it to wildlife resources. We don’t have confirmation if it’s one of our pair but security said they has only seen one bird in the box since he arrived Monday morning. He thinks it’s the female.

Good news, Tony called me about 30 minutes ago and we have a hatch. It has been fed as well. of course there is a question about whether one adult can handle feeding and raising one or more young by themselves if we have lost an adult. Still no update on camera hook up to stream. Waiting on the guy from DNR to have the time, I think.

Notes from Bob Walters, retired now from Utah DWR

1. Trying to get my hands on the carcass, I’m told DWR has it in possession (if I can measure the tarsus, or leg diameter, I can determine if male, or female

2. I will speak to my One Utah Center contact tomorrow as to how many eggs are in the clutch or any more hatches

3. I intend to talk to the DWR expert(s) asap (I’ve tried today without success) to receive their input (1 idea: provide a bird carcass daily on an adjacent roof to help out the lone parent, get input from other experts as well, given the unusual situation

4. Do everything by the book, with the permission of the DWR
(peregrines are, after all a protected species)

Liz...thanks for the update...I've been trying to keep up with your posts on FB..(which seems to hate my old computer..these days)

Just saw your post about a 3rd hatch..

Fingers crossed!! Got to be so hard trying to observe from so far away!!

How many times have you and Bob said: "sure wish we had the cam working!!"

ML,
It is frustrating about the internet hookup. Since Bob retired he doesn’t have much pull to get things done. He tried to get in to the office today to view the carcass but couldn’t get anyone to answer the phone. I don’t know if it makes any difference which adult is trying to manage on their own. I’m very interested to see if we have a fourth hatch!

We have a cam..and thank goodness its YouTube...with a DVR..

I haven't seen food come in..or caught a feed...but, it could have happened before it was light enough in the box to catch one.

"Houston, we have a problem"

A chick is wedged between the box and outer ledge. Its on its back and no matter how hard it tries, it can't flip over.

Dad has tried to help..

I've texted Liz...but, I'm not even sure its the right number..Also posted on FB...so, hopefully they can figure out something to help.

Ya know..if there is a weak spot anywhere in a nest, a chick will find it and get in trouble. I remember several times a Columbus chick got in trouble and Donna had to go up there to rescue..
