Condor Update- 11/23/2021 @2 pm PT
Hi All,

Rosalie (1036), Jan (1038), and Jane (1019) are all doing well. Jane has been the most adventurous so far and took the longest flight of the three. She was about a mile from the release pen and spending her days practicing flying and learning her new surroundings. She returned for the first time today!

Rosalie and Jan have done the complete opposite and took their first big flights yesterday and were about a half mile from the release pen. Looks like Jan made her way back today, faster than expected, hopefully Rosalie is close by!

Next release-
Iniko (1031), Dian Fossey (1011), and Rachel Carson (1042) will be released on December 4th. We are so excited, it's only 10 days away. Please come join us for this momentous event. We will start the zoom at 0930 and plan to release at 10am PST. You can sign up for the release event at www.ventanaws.org. If you missed the last Condor Zoom Chat (11/18/2021), visit our web site to tune in.

Thank you Explore Viewers!

PS- We have a Xmas ornament commemorating Iniko's return to the wild. https://www.ventanaws.org/store/p33/Baby_Iniko_Ornamen

:sorrow: Chick# 1075 of the the Hutton's Bowl nest passed recently at the LA Zoo. He had lost his father and Mom had continued his care, but in a similar situation as Iniko, a possibly territorial male came in and fought and they took a tumble out of the nest and 100' down. This chick was rescued and taken to the zoo. Photo of him in his sling harness below.

Update from Michael Clark about #1075, the Hutton's Bowl chick

"1075 died suddenly and unexpectedly. He had spinal damage and no use of his legs and tail when we first received him presumably from the 100+ foot fall. The tip of his beak was broken off. He had several broken bones including a wing bone. By the time he died all the bones appeared to have healed. The legs and tail were improving ever so slowly so we had hope he might make a full recovery. Necropsy performed but more tests are pending for a definite cause of death. He didn't seem to be in any obvious pain and was playful, had a good appetite and wanted to explore his environment like a chick of his age would naturally seek, except his paralysis severely limited his ability to do anything. He had a special apparatus that allowed him to lay in a harness with his legs hanging down and feet touching the ground. We would monitor any slight movement of his feet that developed. It was a long and messy period as he couldn't keep himself clean so he had to be cleaned up and bathed by hand every day. I can tell you this, after treating countless condors for lead poisoning and other injuries, this bird was not showing any signs of pain or discomfort, quite the contrary as I believe he was mostly numb from the waist down for the greater part of his time here. We did all we could do with the long term goal of getting him back into the wild. Cant win them all."

:7val: Thought I had posted here on Iniko's release yesterday. Either forgot or I placed it elsewhere. She is still there today at San Simeon eating and hanging out. This is what I posted yesterday on "Breaking News":

:flirty: "Iniko is free!! Was the 2nd condor out of the pen by about 4-5 seconds and has been free about 1/2 hour. She went for a carcass right away and continues to feed on it now."

Post-release Update 12/6/2021

Dian Fossey (1011), Iniko (1031), and Rachel Carson (1042) were successfully released on December 4th (in that order). We thought Iniko would be the first to go, but Dian made the first leap toward freedom followed quickly by Iniko. Rachel took her time and came out about an hour later. They join Jane Goodall, Jan Hamber and Rosalie Barrrow Edge, who were eager to reconnect with their old flight pen pals. More good news, all three of the newbies roosted together off the ground their first night.

For Iniko, this marked the start of a new chapter in her life. Iniko's long road back to the wild almost ended before it started when 729 "Ninja" attacked her back in October 2020, injuring her leg. After a successful rescue, she fully recovered thanks to the care of the LA Zoo condor crew. She was transferred to San Simeon mid-October to join 5 other amazing female pre-release condors.

After the Dolan Fire of 2020 and other setbacks from lead poisoning deaths, the flock dropped to 79 in early 2021. However, the condors, with their trademark resiliency, never gave up and kept pushing forward. They fledged 6 condors in the wild in 2021, increasing the flock to 85. The release of Iniko, Jane, Jan, Rachel, Dian, and Rosalie boosted the central California flock even further to 91 condors!

Thank you Explore viewers for being part of Iniko's journey and for your unwavering support of California condors.

If you missed the release, you can watch it here- https://youtu.be/a1Wc1r-hu_I

Join us at our next zoom chat on December 16, 2021 @ 4pm PST for updates on Iniko and the rest of the flock! sign up at http://www.ventanaws.org

Thank you Everyone!

PS- This is the time of year when untagged wild chicks start showing up with mom and dad on the Big Sur cam. The pairs with untagged chicks are Nomad/574 & Miracle/538 (Chick 1104), Ferdinand/652 7 550 (Chick 1095), and Amigo/204 & Kodama/646 (Chick 1089). We believe Junipero/663, who is solo parenting with a leg injury, is still tending to his chick 1077.

:7val: Junipero and Phoenix were both seen at Big Sur Sanctuary today. You'll notice Junipero is missing the necrotic part of his left foot as it apparently fell off. As he did not have surgery, for me this is the best outcome for him. While he has trouble feeding here at this moment in time, he is obviously able to feed in other situations for now as he is able to sustain himself and they believe still taking care of his motherless chick. Video of Junipero below. Also, Iniko was seen today at San Simeon. That girl doesn't miss any meals.
