:15heartbeat: From earlier today on the Savanah GHO nest:

Landings Bird Cam - Savannah
9 hrs ·
Some of you have noticed that we haven't seen the male Great Horned Owl recently or any recent feedings of the owlet. Our partners at Cornell Lab of Ornithology has posted this info for the viewers of the Great Horned Owl cam:
"Advisory: Possible Issue at Owls' Nest"
For the first few weeks post-hatching, the majority of the food at a Great Horned Owl nest is provided by the male owl. Unfortunately, the male owl at the Savannah nest has not been heard or seen since March 2, and the last time the owlet has been seen eating was the morning of March 4.
It’s unclear whether the female owl will be able to catch enough prey to raise the owlet herself, but there are records of single-parent Great Horned Owl nests successfully fledging multiple owlets and we are hopeful that, if the male owl does not return, there could still be a successful nesting season.
We understand if viewers would prefer not to watch until the outcome is clearer. We will continue streaming from the site to discover what the future might hold for the Savannah Great Horned Owl nest."

:5val: At the GHO nest, the Mom left while still some daylight to hunt. At 20:17 an adult (site debating if it was Dad) returned with a Cedar Waxwing for the owlet, then left. It worked and worked to swallow it whole, then about 20:45 it tore off a piece and swallowed. Still continued to try to swallow the rest, but so far has not. An adult returned to a branch above the nest at about 22:40.

:10sum: And at about 23:55 the GHO that was on the branch went down to the nest and when the prey was found, it was torn and fed to the owlet. This adult owl was much larger than the one who initially brought the prey in and dropped it in front of the owlet and left. Due to the size difference and behavior (Mom would not have dropped the prey in front of the owlet and left, only the males deliver prey, but do not do the feed) I believe the Dad is no longer MIA and it was he who delivered the prey to the nest.

MISSING DAD
March 6, 2022
I've wondered where he is - and why the pantry is empty. He kept it full.
Female was gone a very long time this morning.
I remember the male loved to wait til his mate ate his gift before he flew up to a branch, and hooted bye bye. They're a nicely mated pair.

DAD FEEDS OWLETTA
March 7, 2022 Its EXTREMELY RARE for the male to feed the young. Not unheard of, I've seen it before. I even saw the male try to feed the 3 eggs when the female was away. ;D

About 8 pm March 6 while Mom was gone, Dad dropped off a mouse. Owletta took it from him, tried to swallow it whole but she is too young still. Dad flew off. Hunting must be bad, wonder why. When Mom returned, she fed baby.

4.30 am Mom was gone 5 hours March 6 evening, back for a short time to warm and comfort baby, then left again. I have seen her return twice - no prey.

* I changed this 3 times! I kept scrolling back and found it - got pics.
He appeared like a ghost and was gone - poof! Hard to find.
Males truly care about their young.

:1val: My "please read my 2 posts above" was not meant for you, but others. When I posted it, you did not have the part in your post about "Dad feeds owletta" and left it as if the Dad were still missing and the owlet had not been fed. I remember you even said something about the Mom returning a couple times without prey and leaving again without feeding the owlet. So you came back and heavily edited/added correct info and left me holding the bag. Next time, I'll hit the quote button and you'll be left holding the bag.. :teehee:
