:eggthumb: Saw this post from the Mod on who has shown up so far today:

In addition to the ones listed at the link Leia posted, we've seen 801 and we think 171 and a couple of un id'd bears (probably sub adult) today.

801 has just left the falls. He is a boar who was 1st seen in 2015 or 2016. Some years he was not seen by the bear mod or not enough times, so not included as being seen that season, but was seen by viewers on the cams. Bear mods record the bears they see over so many weeks per season and must be seen at least 3 times during that period to count. He was also confused with a few other bears in the past and referred to with those numbers and it made it difficult to follow him. But, "Plumbers Butt" is sometimes used as he likes to sit on this rock resulting in this:

Capture by Blair-55, 801 sitting on his favorite rock at the falls. (Be sure to scroll down to see all of 801.)

Gif by Blair-55, 801 standing on the rock at the falls.

Capture by Elanya, Showing a great view of what 801 is standing on and is usually not seen like this, but the water level is low right now.

Capture by Ratna Narayan ( Team 747! ), 171 by the boat.

Capture by Ratna Narayan ( Team 747! ), 171 running off a sub who some are saying is 167. (Also, interesting is the speculation in the recent past is if 167 is a cub from 171's 2016 cubs. I think they are considered adults by the age of 6, but continue to gain in size.)

:eggthumb: The 909's could be seen on the LR (Lower River) cam about an hour ago.

:eggthumb: Found that 901 was seen this morning. She is speculated to be the daughter of "Electra" (284) from 2016. She is 6 1/2 years old and so far has never been seen with cubs, but that is not unusual at this age.

Capture by Ratna Narayan ( Team 747! ), 901 near the fallen tree this morning.

:eggthumb: Thanks so much, Beth! Hoping others will join in soon. Had to leave early last night and am just now getting in at the bear cams today. In the little time I have been in have learned Holly returned during the night without her cub who some called "Jolly". This was anticipated as it would be normal for Jolly to be emancipated this spring. Jolly was the coy injured with porcupine quills in her paw back in 2020 and she limped with that injury and the quills could be seen for a very long time. But by the 2021 season, she had recovered. The mother and daughter team of Holly and Jolly were big fan favorites.

I saw a video where Holly while fishing during the night below the falls had to jump from the rock and up to the top of the falls as a boar came up behind her. It is being reported that boar was 856. Right now Holly is being pursued by 801 "Plumber's Butt" who I have previously shown. Holly is obviously in estrus. She is an older bear right up there with Otis in age.

Also one of the Wayne Brothers is here today. I will try to cover Holly and the Wayne brother later tonight and maybe 856 who I admire very much if he shows more today. If that was him during the night, it was his 1st time on cam this season, although he had been seen by staff or visitors earlier this spring. As far as I know this was the 1st sighting this season of Holly and Wayne Brother.

:15heartbeat: Did not get to Holly and Wayne Brother, but will circle back to them at another time. It seems the working out of who will be "Top Bear" this season has begun today on 6/24/22. 747 was top bear last season for the 1st time and 856 held that position for about the previous 10 years with the exception of 1 when he was injured and had a very bad limp and made himself scarce.

There was an incident earlier today between 856 and 747 and multiple incidents this evening. There has been no contact between the 2, just 856 letting 747 know that it is he, 856 that is top bear and 747 is not showing any resistance. He is injured and really can't. Once this eve when 856 approached him, 747 dropped his fish in the water that he had been eating and 856 got it and ate it right in front of him.

856 even stopped by the riffles to let Wayne Brother know he is top bear. Again there was no physical contact and the other bears are not showing any resistance. Grazer watched this incident very intently while standing on the fallen tree. She didn't move a muscle, when it was over she took her girls to the other side and went up the hill.

It looks as if 856 barring any injuries will once again take this position, unless some of the other big boars show up and think otherwise. Grazer has returned with her girls and displaced Plumber's Butt (801) from his fishing spot and 856 was in the jacuzzi when I left.

This was the 1st incident much earlier today of 856 telling 747 that it is he, 856 who is "Top Bear"! Very surprising is 856 actually looks heavier than 747. He's always been taller, but not heavier looking. I wonder if 747 used up much of his reserves while in the den and once he was injured in the unwitnessed fight was not able to get around to eat much for awhile. I just don't know...

Video by Jen Schneider, 856 is on the right and is showing 747 he is "Top Bear"! (With bears it is said he who walks away 1st is the winner, but not always.)

This is a gif showing 856 attempting to do a cowboy walk as he left 747 and this happened after 1 of the incidents this evening:

Yes, apparently these embarrassing things happen to bears just as they do with people who get a little full of themselves... :teehee:

And I am not sure who this is already running away from him earlier today as soon as he sees 856 approaching, but 856 decided to make sure he knows he made the right decision to run from him just the same:

Video by Jen Schneider, bear running from 856 on 6/24/22.

:10sum: Thanks, gigi! I saw Grazer and her girls running earlier, but haven't been able to find out why. There were fishermen nearby, but they didn't seem to be the cause. The girls were looking back in the opposite direction and it made you think possibly a large boar. Glad to see others posting, they sure are a lot of fun to watch! Here's a video of 747 doing his best "cowboy walk" to show dominance even though he was just displaced by 856 in the jacuzzi! 856 continues to let 747 know he is "Top Bear" once again. More incidents today just as yesterday with no contact.

Video by Jen Schneider, 747 doing the "cowboy walk" as he is leaving the falls and stopping to look over at 856 who has just displaced him in the "J" (from earlier today.)

:eggthumb: YW, Beth! This is the 1st time I have seen these girls on the lip this season and it was about an hour ago, after the big boys had settled and were gone for now at least.

Capture by Bluebird, the 909's at the falls to check out the fishing. (Aww...Mom and Lil Bean!)

:eggthumb: Thanks, gigi! Here she is fishing the lip with her girls this morning:

Gif by DanteV2000, Grazer and girls fishing the lip on 6/26/22.

Gif by oregonshefisher, one of Grazer's girls trying to get up the cutbank later in the day on 6/26/22.

Gif byRae_Rae, Grazer's girl finally made it to the top of the cutbank to join her Mom and sister on 6/26/22.

Capture by Brenda05, this is the Bear Monitor's chair that sits atop the cutbank. They sit here to see what bears are around and make notations. An individual bear must be seen at least 3 times in a so many week period to be counted as part of the season. They do this for so many weeks in the summer and again in the fall, I believe. They also monitor bears from other locations.

:flirty: One story line all day has been of 856 in pursuit of of 901 who is speculated to be the daughter of "Electra" born in 2016. She is in estrus and 856 has followed her and followed her all day to mate. He has taken time outs to eat and also for a really quick rest on the beach and to show other boars who is top bear. I was watching him when he got up and continued his pursuit after his rest. He was walking along the beach and then into the water he was walking in the upright position by a female standing on the beach with a gentleman nearby fishing. The cam operator quickly averted as they do not want people on cam, however not before you got an idea just how large these bears are. Next to that woman on the beach and even seeing only his head, neck and shoulders above the water was very shocking as to how large he was. I'll never forget it, he was that large! So far he has not caught up with 901 as she just keeps on trucking. Some of these pursuits can last a couple weeks before the male is successful.

Gif by Rae_Rae, 856 in pursuit of 901 this evening on 6/26/22.

Gif by LeafyHyraxua, Walker (151) on the left shoving 820. Prior to this, Walker and 820 had been at the falls and 820 was walking away when Walker started chasing him. The gif starts when 820 called Walker's bluff by stopping abruptly and turning to face him. After this encounter Walker walked away.

Gif by LeafyHyraxua, this is thought to be 910 (daughter born in 2016 to 409 "Beadnose" a much beloved bear no longer seen) with the 1st coy (cub of the year, born in the den this past winter) seen so far this season. 901 is a 1st time Mom as far as is known.

Capture by JG, 910 with her coy.

:eggthumb: The big story this morning seemed to be of (151) Walker throwing his weight around. He too would like to be top bear, but at least a couple in his way would be 856 and 747, possibly more. You can ID Walker easily even if only his head is above water, if you see his ears.

Capture by Blair-55, Classic Walker,

Video by Jen Schneider, Walker going after 801 twice back to back, then he saw a fish...

Gif by DanteV2000, Walker on the lip fishing after throwing his weight around with 801.

There were others around this morning. From the BF cam looking down toward the riffles, you could see Grazer and her girls run toward the right bank and knew trouble of some sort in Grazer's eyes was near. Then sure enough walking toward the falls, but ignoring Grazer this time, here comes 747 (Grazer really dislikes him) meandering in.

Capture by Blair-55, 747 fishing in the "J".

Gif by Cruiser, One of Grazer's girls having a rest on her sister when things were calmer this morning.

And is 856 still following his one and only for now? But of course he is!

Gif by Cruiser, 856 in pursuit of 901 with an unknown bear running ahead of them as it sees the enormous boar headed its way!

Evening of 6/27/22

:5val: Came in just now and found Grazer and girls fishing the lip on the BF cam, Walker on the RF cam and strangely I could see 856 lying in the river on the LR cam and nothing else and I thought what's up with him. Answer below!

Capture by Rolling Trouble (WA2019), Grazer and girls fishing the lip with a couple boars below the falls. Action in the evenings is starting to pick up and soon the lip and below the falls will be teeming with bears if it's anything like last summer with the terrific salmon run they had here. Sometimes on the lip and below the falls area, you could easily count 30 to almost 40 bears on the BF cam on a lot of the evenings. And don't forget...it's the land of the midnight sun!!

Capture by robot, (151) Walker in the riffles.

Capture by Owl&Osprey<3, 856 lying in the lower river watching 901 eat. (Answer to above in intro: What I couldn't see at first because of the cam's focus was actually 901 is out in the river too.)

:dancegirl: Couldn't resist bringing this gif over of 807 from earlier this evening of 6/27/22, an adult male speculated to be 132's from 2014. He is known as an "early bear" because he shows up in early summer, then leaves in July, but they said he did stay into August last year. Some bears do travel to other places. Some bears are known as "fall bears" as they do not come to Brooks Falls till September or so. This guy is a really great looking bear and check out those eyes!

Gif by DanteV2000, "BF: Close-Open".

You can check out this Q&A later today (Mike Fitz used to be a Ranger at Brooks for several years before joining explore.org as a resident naturalist. You'll like Mike a lot!):

Tuesday, (every Tuesday) 5 – 7 p.m. ET/2 – 4 p.m. PT, Chat Q & A in the comments on the Brooks Live Chat Channel with Mike Fitz, explore.org’s resident naturalist, and Ranger Chris Kliesrath. Bring all your Bear Cam questions and post them in the comments.

Thanks for the updates. :15heartbeat:
I bet Grazer and her girls will dominate the lip again this year - or just about any spot they decide to be!
