Alex at the KNF-3 nest spent most of the day incubating his eggs and remains there tonight. He continues to have intruders in the area. This morning most likely the same female intruder from yesterday flew onto the nest with a fish while he was there. Then there was a flyby intruder within seconds and Alex chose to fly out chasing that one. The female ate her fish and did not disturb the eggs. Then she moved a stick from one side of the rails to the other. She looked down at the eggs and shortly she flew. Alex could be heard vocalizing during her stay. After she left, he flew to the nest.

Nobody on the nest at KNF-3 tonight. Have read but did not see that Alex finally left this afternoon. They said he is maybe becoming a little more comfortable with the intruder female. At one point today he flew off and she followed him out. Unfortunately, there is now a second intruder female about and she was on the nest tonight but flew up possibly higher in the nest tree. Also, the 1st female buried the eggs again under the fluff at some point today.

Alex seems to be back on the nest tonight incubating his eggs. And the 1st female intruder is still around and I've read she seems to be flying out to defend this nest from other intruders. Hoping Alex accepts her.

Alex incubated the eggs at intervals today, it was a rainy one. He is not incubating tonight. The 1st female continues to be on the nest with him at times.

Alex incubated the eggs at intervals today, but not tonight. The 1st intruder female called F1 is on a rear branch and can be seen on cam right now preening, but she has been sleeping with her head tucked previous. The eggs are in full view on the nest.

Alex continues to incubate the eggs at intervals by day and then continuous at night.

So sad, the turn of events here. Possibly avian flu. Witnessed it in our falcons and same symptoms.
We hadto do pickup ,not easy on the heart strings.
Positive vibes here

Post U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest :

Quote:
What excitement to ring in the New Year with our resident eagles! For those of you just tuning in, Anna, the female in E-1 (mate is Louis), showed signs of being unwell a few days ago. However, her symptoms were a little different from Andria (the female eagle of E-3 which died on 12/8/2023, cause still unknown, waiting on necropsy results.) Anna was last seen on Saturday; but made an appearance on Sunday at dusk when ANOTHER female eagle ambushed her in mid-air and knocked her to the ground! Everything was caught on the eagle cams so Forest Service staff were able to hasten to the site and capture Anna using a large net and blanket. Anna was transferred to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital in Baton Rouge for assessment by wildlife biologist tech, Cody Austell. Thank you, Cody, and wildlife biologist, Steve Shively, for going out last night to search for Anna. Many thanks to the YouTube Bald Eagle Cam viewers who helped us retrieve Anna by monitoring the nest and eagle behavior closely. The veterinarian is running tests on Anna to determine if Avian Flu may be the culprit. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, or HPAI, is fatal to birds, so this is a very serious disease. We are all hoping and praying the best for Anna. MEANWHILE, "As the Nest Turns," a NEW pair of eagles have done a walk-through of the E-3 nest and may decide to take up residence if they like the neighborhood as Alex has flown the proverbial coop and not been seen for days. Louis has tried to continue to incubate his and Anna's single egg while a new Female has appeared and tried to get cozy. He was having none of it but she is persistent and continues to hang around. She may have been the culprit who chased poor Anna away and knocked her down.

Just saw this on Facebook...

:sorrow: Anna~

From U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest

This is not the post we had hoped to make today. We are saddened and heartbroken to inform everyone that Anna died yesterday on January 1. Anna began to present symptoms of nasal discharge, diarrhea, and slight tremors while at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital. She even had a seizure, indicating she was having serious neurological distress. Before she could suffer worse symptoms, the vet euthanized her. The results of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) test will tell us definitely if Anna had the disease, although everything does present as if she did. If she did not have HPAI, her body has been frozen and a necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause. As soon as we receive the results from the test run on Anna, we will let you all know. Why did Anna have to be euthanized so quickly rather than wait 48 to 72 hours for the test results? 1) Anna was suffering, and 2) LSU does not have a bio-secure area to hold sick animals. Since Anna appeared to have HPAI, if they kept her and it was confirmed she had the disease, they would have to euthanize every bird in their facility - including three eagles undergoing rehabilitation, a Cooper's Hawk, and many other raptors and various other birds. Avian Flu is a serious, deadly disease of all birds that is of grave concern. Many have asked how they can contribute to the conservation and care of eagles. The USDA Forest Service does not endorse or encourage donations or contributions to specific organizations, but does want to share that there is a way to donate to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital. This wildlife hospital is the only facility able to receive eagles in Louisiana. We learned from our interaction with the veterinary doctors that they operate the wildlife hospital on a modest budget and help make ends meet through donations. Please see the screenshot and instructions below on how to donate specifically to the wildlife hospital, if you choose to do so: 1) Link https://bbis32491p.sky.blackbaud.com/give-now; 2) Type in 'Wildlife' under "Fund Name" and hit 3) Click the drop-down arrow under 'We found 3 matching funds'; 4) Select 'Wildlife Hospital of LA Support Fund'; 5) Enter amount of donation and follow the instructions on how to enter payment. You may also donate in memory or in honor of someone, etc. and designate in the comments

This is very sad but I feared this. This is highly contagious. It is my hope they keep an eye out in sites in this area. I witnessed this terrible disease in action, 2 years ago. It was very hard and many falcons in our area died. I figured they may have to euthanize her, as did we with a few falcons. Ours all tested for avian flu. This disease is horrible and I hope it does not continue in this area. More than eagles and falcons can be affected.
Nature can be cruel
Big thanks to those who retrieved her. She did have to die alone and was given the gift of a peaceful pass.
I tend not to comment on these issues any more but I witnessed this first hand, and knew the symptoms.
Hugs to all followers of these sites :15heartbeat:

This is very disappointing news from the U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest below. (I follow both the KNF-1 and KNF-3 nests on a daily basis and hope to do a summary post on what has been transpiring at each nest since the losses of Anna and Andria this weekend.)

U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest's Post
U.S. Forest Service - Kisatchie National Forest

We have received word from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital that the results from Anna (E-1 Female) were inconclusive as to whether Anna had Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Upon learning this, the veterinarian went to retrieve Anna's body from the freezer to run a second test and learned that Anna's body had been incinerated. This news is very disappointing to us all as we really wanted to know what had made Anna ill. Based on clinical science and the symptoms she presented on New Year's Day, the veterinarian did say he believes Anna was infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Another female eagle from nest E-3, Andria, died earlier in December and we are still waiting on her necropsy results. We have called the facility in Georgia where she was sent and they do not have any results yet. These tests take weeks to perform and we were told once they reach a determination, Andria will be sent to another USDA facility for confirmation of the diagnosis, so this may take months before we receive any results. >sigh<
We understand your frustration and disappointment, as we feel the same way. We have lost two beautiful mama eagles that we have all come to love and have no definitive answers as to what killed them. We will keep you posted when we do hear back about Andria's results. Meanwhile, in the next weeks, we will learn all we can about HPAI (how long does it linger, how is it spread, why some succumb and others do not, is there anything we can do to stop the spread, etc.) We will also continue to watch the happenings at E-1 and E-3. Looks like the new pair at E-3 may decide to move in permanently. Watch Live cams here https://www.youtube.com/@KNFcams/streams

From watching falcons succumb to avian flu, the symptoms do sound like avian flu.
Unfortunately there is no cure, and it just has to run its course.
My hope is that one day, they can find a serum, that can be injected. Hopefully someone is working on it.
Such an awful thing
