Doing good ... morning switch....

Image
Image

Although there has been some drama!

Quote:
The plot thickens at our osprey nest yet again! There has been more intruder activity this morning, with male stranger actually landing on the nest, much to everyones dismay. Despite a bit of frantic mantling, squabbling and shouting on the nest, the eggs seem to have come through unscathed.

We got a decent look at the stranger this time , who appears to have only a small metal BTO leg ring, and not a coloured Darvic ring, which would make ID easy. We will be trying today to get a close up on this ring to answer the question we’re all asking: who is he, can could he possibly be Eric (minus a l0st leg ring)?

The male must be doing a good job of bringing in fish. These 2 are full first thing in the morning! They don't even want to get up! :) :)

Yes, just came off the webcam and read the statement. Very, very sad. But, at least the 25 year old Lady produced two healthy chicks this season. Can only hope that the Laird will take over the feeding duties.

Stay tuned. Can't make out much in darkness due to branch (?) in front of cam. BUT, more movement from Lady this afternoon and she stood up. May mean nothing in the general scheme of things, but we don't know yet.

Mary, you can take comfort, she's in the best hands. They are doing, in my opinion, the absolute best for her and her chicks, safety and comfort and peace..

Dawn is breaking - and so is my heart. :-( :-( Lady is still breathing... clicks are sleeping deeply .... and the birds are beginning to chirp.

Yes, Jazzel, the osprey group at LOL are exhibiting, literally, magnificent commitment to their Lady, who at this moment is standing fully upright although eyes still appear closed. Perhaps she has been picking up small bits of fish in the nest and has regained some strength. (?)

This saga is truly a lesson of nature at work. Laird (the male) bringing fish for the chicks, the chicks self feeding out of necessity (which just goes to prove!), and I could go on and on.

It's going to be an up and down day, this longest day of the year.

I just snapped this picture. Has Lady recovered or is this the male? I've got my fingers crossed that this is Lady!

Lady flew off the nest shortly after 6:00 P.M. nest time ... the blog is currently overloaded and no one can get on. An adult has returned to the nest but I'm not positive it it's her or the male.

There was a feeding by the male at 5:00 P.M. followed by Lady getting up and pacing around the nest. I went to lunch and when I got back I read that she had flown off. (I will find the video).

Here's the video of her flying off. Sherri at Maine is 99% sure this is her on the nest now.

Thanks, PattiO, for the info, pictures, and video. If it really is Lady at the nest now, it looks like she's made a miraculous recovery!

Second adult just flew in with food! It looks like Lady had a bite and is letting the chicks feed themselves now.

When the adult osprey brought in food, there was already an adult in the nest...I was so surprised that I forgot to to take a picture with both adults. :?

Our web blog is down at the moment. We are working hard to fix the problem. My apologies to all who are watching the camera and reading the blog. I will try to keep you updated through this page. The Lady is proving to be a very tuff old bird and amazing to watch but I don’t think she is out of the woods yet. She flew off the nest earlier and glided to the edge of the Loch. She then took four drinks of water then flew back up to the nest. She did have difficulty in finding the nest. She looked quite disorientated. She has been back there now for over an hour and has been food calling. The male came in with a very small pike a short while ago. He left it for the chicks to fight over. After they finished the pike (which Mum showed no interest in) Mum moved to look down through the sticks in the side of the nest as if she was urging the chicks to look. They did and one of them pulled out a very small fish that had been lodged in there somehow. Just amazing! Peter
